Thank god this weekend is over after three days of parsing reports. After scrolling through innumerable columns of numbers, I swear that when I close my eyes, the world has a "Matrix" appearance. Thinking about that makes it somewhat worrisome. What if I am actually experiencing reality as it is and my frazzled brain is no longer protecting me from a mechanical reality? @Meenzer there’s a link needs trololo-ing

Am I turning into my mam? I've reread all the books over the past 5 or so years. My main take is that they are in the main a bit shit, but still miles better than Wallams etc. The seqel to Charlie and Chocolate factory for instance is almost unreadaable now, not surprised its never been made into a film. Bit I did love that book as a kid with imagination. There is also definitely a whiff of mysogny running through some books like the Witches. However, Esio Trot is something else. Basically imagines the World as a sex pest's point of view. Really a bit disturbing getting into the head of Gemmill, but a great laugh nontheless. CS Lewis stuff must be next for the ban surely. The Last Battle is pure Islamophobic nonsense. Then there's Tolkein which is almost a white supremacist/eugenics manual. And I hear Harry Potter hates the LGTBIQA+ movement or something. Hard to keep us with kids nowadays, sometimes I just want to give up and join the ranks of Gemmill's Mam. I loved The Chronicles of Narnia as a kid but I realised years ago there’s (very thinly) veiled Islamophobia running through any of the novels featuring Calormen. I’m surprised more isn’t made of it as it’s so blatant

Blastronaut 1333
Far too many authors from that era had some pretty seriously questionable views that seeped through into their work. Not condoning it or playing the "oh he's old, he doesn't know any better, it's a generational thing" card but Lewis, Tolkien and Dahl's bigotry is far more tame and concealed than the likes of H.P Lovecraft (whose works are still absolutely fascinating, in spite of him being a profoundly vocal bonafide straight up racist headcase). Thankfully I don't think Lovecraft's main target audience was children.
wykikitoon 20129
Went out with the family yesterday for the Mother in law's birthday. Lovely day. BUT My wife's Aunt who is 79 wouldn't shut the fuck up about that lass who's gone missing. She was talking about the body being found. We were sat in a pub restaurant. I was sitting next to my 7 year old nephew and we were doing some colouring in and puzzles books. At one point he looked at me and asked why a body was in a river. I had to ask her if she could change the subject as he was picking up on it. We then went to ours after for coffee cake blah blah. First thing she asks for is if we could put the news on as it was nearly 6. When I said no, lets all have birthday cake and a good laugh she was proper pissed Fucking Tory!

I think I saw that as a six year old, and pretty much planted the seed of me stopping belieiving in God as it begged more questions than it answered. Also, In the Last Battle, one of the main protagonists, Susan, literally goes to Hell because she became more intertested in lipstick and boys than Narnia and Aslan. I'll be honest, unlike Dahl, I think it is really quite offensive now. Talking of the Dahl censorship, fucking hell man! Quote In The Witches, a paragraph explaining that witches are bald beneath their wigs ends with the new line: “There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.” In previous editions of James and the Giant Peach, the Centipede sings: “Aunt Sponge was terrifically fat / And tremendously flabby at that,” and, “Aunt Spiker was thin as a wire / And dry as a bone, only drier.” Both verses have been removed, and in their place are the rhymes: “Aunt Sponge was a nasty old brute / And deserved to be squashed by the fruit,” and, “Aunt Spiker was much of the same / And deserves half of the blame.” References to “female” characters have disappeared. Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, once a “most formidable female”, is now a “most formidable woman”. Gender-neutral terms have been added in places – where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Oompa Loompas were “small men”, they are now “small people”. The Cloud-Men in James and the Giant Peach have become Cloud-People. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/feb/18/roald-dahl-books-rewritten-to-remove-language-deemed-offensive

Ginolaandtonic 169
Sanitising literature is completely counter productive. These works help illustrate our collective journey to (hopefully) enlightenment. Plus The Bible and The Koran might start having to look over their shoulders… 👀

Episode 1000 of the culture wars, don't let yourselves get sucked in Dahl used to rewrite his books himself anyway as views became more enlightened. He changed the Oompa-loompas from being black to orange for example. It's not like they are burning the millions of old books in existence and replacing them.
