Kevin Carr's Gloves 3984
I am looking for a new job and was thinking of using one of these places that does your CV for you. Anybody used one and can give me some pointers? Help would be greatly appreciated.
Rob W 0
I wouldn't bother - there is plenty of advice on the Net for free Professional ones all look the same and artificial You need name and contact details top Centre short statement of what your strenghts are "good looking multi millionaire will work for free" - think of the jobs you'll be applying for job experience in reverse order (ie newest first) with a short decripion of what you achieved Education Interests (best to lay off CAMRA and "watching japanese porno vids") Personal details - age, driving licence, languages, married/not married etc etc Keep it down to 2 sides of A4 Not too many fonts and size changes - the simpler the better SPELL CHECK Make sure your contact details are there and are correct I'll take a look if you want when you are done - PM me
snakehips 0
I agree with Rob. As long as the information is well presented your own one will be just as good imo.
Gemmill 46093
You can get CV Making Software for you computer. It'll be much cheaper and they have all the standard wording already supplied and all you really have to do is provide the facts about your employment history. They also suggest wordings for you so you should end up with something pretty decent. I would use something like this over an expensive agency tbh. Renton 22015
Always a good idea to tailor your CV specifically to the job you're after as well. If anyone has any good links to sites giving advice, I'd appreciate it as well because I am updating my CV too.
JawD 99
Id agree. As an employer I get sent CV's in the post regularly. Hand written can be fine but it must be really neat. Done in word is much better. Clear and easy to read, as Rob says two sides of A4 max. Personally Im more interested in previous experience than I am education. But thats just me

Renton 22015
Most jobs do application forms nowadays though, don't they? I don't mind the standard ones, but some are horrible. Plus, I hate hand-writing them.
rikko 20
Just do it in Word. And when you've done it get 3 or 4 folk to read it over and suggest improvements in language and make sure theres no spelling errors. Also if you have a standard one with bits you change depending on the job as i do remember to complete it. You don't want to have the following line on a CV: "interested in working in (Insert what company does here)..." Still got an interview mind, just doesnt look great... snakehips 0
Unless, of course, you're applying to join the porn industry? When I did, I just sent a pic of the weapon:) Didn't get the job though Edited April 4, 2006 by snakehips
Happy Face 29
"Able to work alone or as part of a team" "Excellent communication skills" "emphasis on customer focus" you'll be a shu in

How much is it? 114723[/snapback] The software is standalone, but it produces files in RTF format which can then be opened in Word so you can do final checks in Word and send it on as a word document. I think I've got one called ResumeMaker Deluxe which is useless to me as I'm now on Macs, so if anyone wants it? I'll have to make sure I've definitely still got it like. Renton 22015
My favourite CV for a job at my place had the line "I am good at killing rats". He meant for laboratory research purposes, which is irrelevant to what we do anyway. Later in the CV he said he was willing to work up to 30 miles from London. Not good when you're applying for a job in Newcastle.

Rob W 0
we get at least one application a year where the eejit forgets to include their contact details.............................. which saves us a lot of bother and a piece of paper that looks as if it was recycled from the bog at the Central Station says a lot about you too................. Of course even the best CV doesn't stand a chance in some cases - I had a boss who used to automatically bin applications from people who had PhD's or were Swiss................... he never explained why

It's a job application ffs, not a shopping list.

Gemmill 46093
I always use recruitment consultants, but they're specific to accountancy - Nigel Wright in the town is a good one. I'm not sure what Monster would be like tbh.
