The Bad Taste Joke Thread....

If there's one thing guarenteed to annoy people even more it's telling them to 'chillax'.

If there's one thing guaranteed to annoy a Luke even more, it's calling them Lukey Boy. :)

:)

Btw, didn't Jonny ban that RICO for racism? But racism is okay if it's in this thread, is that how it works?

I'm not suggesting anyone should be banned, of course.

No I never.

Don't worry, T-Keith will be along in a minute to grass up whoever it was.

In this thread I would say it is ok to some extent.

I don't think Brock in genuinely racist.

Ah, okay, it is allowed, thanks for the clarification. Double standards, yay!

And I'll open whatever threads I fucking want.

Thats precisely what this thread is. the double standards thread. Where outside we can all be upstanding citizens who cower at the mear thought of hurting someones feelings if, god forbid, you tell somethats thats means to be a joke (I say meant to be due to the standards in here  ) while inside, we poke each other with shitty sticks and take the piss for being fat, smelly, white, green, one legged, bent or indeed GINGER.

Ah, you mean a thread where cowards can air their bigotry on the internet free from consequences. GREAT.

Always find it a bit weird how racism is deemed to be worse than xenophobia, calling Mackems, homophobia, sexism, etc. I realise there is the history of oppression and so on but imo it's all the same morally and in terms of reinforcing stereotypes in many ways. It can also be very funny too, so long as no genuine malice is intended imo.

The people who tell racist jokes in here, do you genuinely think they are racist people?

I can only look at myself for that one. I don't like racist jokes because what makes them work is some underlying assumption that black/asian/foreign people collectively are stupid/greedy/have bad BO/whatever, I don't tell them because I don't like, believe or want to perpetuate that assumption. I'm not saying Brock is a racist, he probably doesn't believe such assumptions either. I just don't see why you would want to tell those jokes if you didn't.

You say 'racist people'...of course I don't think they're BNP voters or wannabe KKK members or anything like that. That kind of racism is easy to see, easy to decry and indefensible, that kind of racism isn't so much of a problem any more. The real problem with casual racism is that it can be laughed off as just a joke, but as long as the jokes are still told, the assumptions are still told and still remain.

Oh and I've already seen one reference to me on this matter in another thread on here today, I think it's quite sad that in 2008 someone who has a problem with racism, no matter how serious or how casual it may be is laughed off as oversensitive. Make fun of me all you want, I just think it's pathetic.

That underlying assumption is generally the setting for the joke, quite often what makes them work is the taboo or the pushing of boundaries. I don't think the jokes in this thread are really perpetuating any stereotypes that people aren't already aware of and therefore aren't causing any harm to anyone. I can understand why you might take issue with some of them but as Alex said, the real issue is whether their is any malice intended behind the joke or comment and I really don't think that there is in this thread.

Good rule of thumb I reckon is: would you say it in front of the person who is the butt of the joke?

How does every black joke start?

With a look over your shoulder.

I wasn't being entirely serious with that statement, more demonstrating that the positive spin JawD put on this thread could easily be interpreted differently.

I see where you're coming from but I don't think you can underestimate the oppression factor though - it wasn't so long ago that black people were treated as subhumans in America...was it only last year that Rosa Parks died? Recently, I can't remember how long.

No, that's wrong. People are not suggesting any new stereotypes, but they are reinforcing pre-existing ones.

How recently did women get the vote in the UK? In some places (Switzerland iirc it was the 60's). In some places women have virtually no rights. How recently was homosexuality illegal still in the UK? - that was the late 60s I think. I know levels of oppression are different and so on but that's why I made the slight distinction in it morally being the same. I wouldn't stop all forms of humour people deem to be offensive (quite the opposite) but there seems to be a bit of hypocrisy (not from you Luke, in general) and an application of double standards over this. I don't think it's particularly healthy in terms of being able to discuss the subject either because if anyone says anything 'mildly' racist and they're famous they may as well be lynching black people as far as the tabloids are concerned. I don't condone racism in any way, obviously.

That brown people are brown and brown turd is brown?

I'd never heard that stereotype used to opress anyone.

Luke, calm down. If Brock was Bernard Manning then I could understand you tutting and rolling your eyes but he's not. I don't for one minute think he tells the jokes because he's racist. To me it's purely ironic.

While I didn't find the jokes funny (I more into nonce jokes, mesel') I don't think they're anything to get all annoyed about. And i'm one of the biggest liberals on this forum. I'd let all the wogs and Pakis in...

See, now I think its pretty sad that these days alot of people are too scared to tell a joke. Honestly, some people need to stop taking life and themselves to fucking serious. I'm not pointing particularly at you, but I do roll my eyes when I hear of another comedian blasted for making jokes of a touchy subject.

I tell jokes about Indians, Bangladeshi, Irish, Scots and so on. But, I've got nothing what-so-ever against any of them. So am I racist or not?

I might tell a joke about someone who just died thats been in the news, what does that make me?

Its one thing standing in the middle of Newcastle with a sign saying every fucker should die who doesnt pray to Mo(hammed) and another to make a joke about white people. Honestly, people need to see the difference.

I blame the women, it started with them getting the vote all this. fuckers.

How many white men does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

One, white men will screw anything.

What's the difference between a white man and a snake?

One is a evil, cold-blooded, venomous, slimy creature of Satan, and the other is a snake.

What's white and fourteen inches long?

Absolutely nothing!

What did a white guy see when he looked at his family tree?

A straight line!

Oh I agree, I think that the double standards you talk of arise because racism throws up a lot more vivid imagary - I can't think of any anti-gay riots for example - and as you say, there are levels of oppression. Just because homphobia and sexism are bad doesn't mean it's wrong to criticise racism though.

Anyway, I've argued the toss for far too long and really need to go into town, so that's my last word on the matter for now.

It was more of general point than me having a go at you or anyone else Luke. Alf Garnett was funny too btw. And not just for people who realised his views were being sent up.

Oh all right then, just one more.

I've already quite clearly explained that I don't think Brock is like Bernard Manning, but also why I don't like his jokes. But thanks for your needless and inaccurate judgement on the matter anyway.

As for students' handling of the concept of irony, that's a rant for another day.

Have to say like, I don't like overtly racist jokes where the premise of the joke is that the person is intrinsically worthless (or something like that) but I have been known to laugh at racist jokes which have the premise based on negative stereotypes (like that a black person is likely to be a criminal for instance).

The disclaimer is there for a reason. As bad a people complaining about the violence, swearing or sexual content of 18 rated films. If Luke finds racism offensive his right to complain ended the moment he forgot that he had been warned.

I'd only agree with alex to some degree, it is obviously better to tell a joke that you'd be comfortable telling in front of the butt of the joke. In that case we'd all have been happy to stand in front of the McCans and howl with laughter at the jokes made about their child being molested, murdered and the like? We'd all be comfortable taking the piss out of the Austrian girl?

bollocks.

Would the joke have been funny if cat shit was white? Would it have been funny if Brock had been specific about a particular black person? (probably not to be honest it's a bit of a shit joke).

Also, Luke, you're not black, so what exactly offended you? Aren't you assuming that the joke would offend blacks? I know plenty of comedians who merrily take the piss out of themselves for whatever seperates them from the white middle class norm on the circuit. Be they black, asian, gay, female, northern, southern, tall, short or whatever. Is it alright for them to take the piss using (and reinforcing) those stereotypes?

I just think you're being a bit precious and argumentative for the sake of it now.
