The barometer I use is when channel 4 (let's face it, it usually is channel 4 who are responsible most of the time) come out with: 'The programme that swept America'. That usually means it is not worth watching.

 

Pity I can't persuade my son about these shitty shows! Maybe I should check his wardrobe for man bags??

Conveniently (for the program) it was on just after the pubs chucked out on Fridays in the days before everyone had 200 channels. Herman worked in an office but there were also several characters who played the 'emotions' in his head. It was shit but I used to watch it too.

I'm really surprised that so many people who I think I share the same sense of humour with on here don't rate Seinfeld. I would rate it in the top 3 best ever comedies, and that includes British ones. It's genius, simple as. I suspect some people are missing the point though when they say they don't like the characters - the characters are supposed to be horrible, repugnant people - even Kramer. This is perfectly summed up in the final episode when they are sent to jail for breaking the "Good Samaritan" law.

 

The only pity is it finished years ago and hasn't been replaced by anything as remotely funny in the US since.

I was surpised as well, but you do find there are alot of people who for whatever reasons just don't rate US sitcoms as highly as UK sitcoms.

 

But conversely (as shown in a recent TV programme) when you ask british comedians, writers and actors for there favourite alltime sitcoms the very top ones included: Seinfled, Frasier, Curb, Larry Sanders and the like.

 

And you're right, the writers/cast of Seinfeld have said they're not supposed to be likeable people!!!

Indeed, (though the actress was from further south in England) and she was a major character pretty much from day one. The only mistake they made in the entire run of Fraiser (other than not ending 2 series earlier) was having Daphne's family made up of:

 

Daphne - manchester accent

Mother - more upper class accent

Father - i can't remember but different again

then one brother was a yank doing a hideous cockney accent, another brother was Richard E Grant and another one was Robbie Coltraine!!!

 

But that aside the programme was one of the most intelligently written and acted comedies around.

I think I've only ever watched one DVD commentary and that was off one of Gervais's stand-ups. It was canny funny but he must be one of the most annoying people in the world to have as a mate.

 

Oh and I watched a commentary of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which was funny, but I couldn't do all the series' or anything.

 

The Seinfeld watchers are definitely shaping up to be nerdtacular like - HF (tick), Papa Laz (tick), Renton (tick).

I loved Cheers as well, always watch the repeats of it when ch4 has them on.

 

Kirsty Ally actually has a series called something like "Fat Actress" where she takes the piss out of being a really fat actress who used to be glamourous and trying to get roles now. Though i haven't seen it so no idea if its any good or not!
