Newcastle United have denied Martin O'Neill is set to become Graeme Souness's replacement as manager.

O'Neill was at Stamford Bridge to watch the Magpies' FA Cup defeat against Chelsea in midweek but the club said no appointment decision had been made yet.

A club spokesman said: "We do not comment on media speculation. We have not ruled anybody in and we have not ruled anybody in."

The News of the World has claimed O'Neill has been offered the post.

Glenn Roeder, assisted by Alan Shearer, took over from Souness on a temporary basis last month.
