Newcastle striker Michael Owen has had minor surgery on his broken foot.

The England striker, 26, has been sidelined since breaking his metatarsal bone in December against Spurs.

Owen said: "The specialists say everything is fine, but to speed the process, they need to tighten the screw they inserted when I had the operation.

"It is a simple process and should ensure that I'm back playing for Newcastle before the end of the season," Owen told the club's website.

Owen broke the bone in his foot in a collision with England team-mate Paul Robinson at Tottenham on December 31.

Newcastle had previously dismissed reports that record £17m signing Owen had suffered a setback in his recovery from a broken foot.

Owen reportedly missed training early in March to consult the surgeon who operated on the metatarsal injury suffered in January.

I'm still confident he'll be available for the world cup.

Fear not.

"Newcastle's Michael Owen has had minor surgery on his broken foot but insists it does not threaten his World Cup place with England."

There's confirmation. I was getting worried about Mickey O - that tournament in the summer is far more important than club of course.

well our season is over, why would he give a fuck about taking part in a few meaningless games at the risk of his world cup? If we had something left to play for I would be annoyed at this but as it is who cares?

It's difficult to tell how much Owen values playing for Newcastle, he hasn't been here for long. We can't blame him wanting to be fit for the World Cup.

I think how long he stays depends on how the club do, and part of that will depend how the new manager uses what limited cash he has in the summer, because it can't possibly be a lot, at least not what we are used to seeing.

We need some sensible sales - and not many either, even fringe players like Ameobi will have to be kept on until we get a realistic offer or sign a small fee player to replace him as 3rd striker, and steady quality players, like Keegan made when he first came to the club in the mould of Venison, Beresford and Bracewell, although a diamond in the mould of Andy Cole or Rob Lee wouldn't come amiss either.

I would def sell Luque and Boumsong for decent offers to raise money. No one else I don't think, because I don't think we would get what they are worth to the club, considering the depth of the squad we have.

EDIT.

Add Faye to the sale list with the other 2

And remember while saying we need to blood youngsters, each position in the premiership is worth 500k. Two places a million quid.
