Just seen the back page of the News of the world as reviewed on SKY Sports news, we have made an £11m bid for Owen.

Also of note, I think it was the Mail on Sunday, Souness has had a falling out the both Jenas and Shepherd.

I'll squeal with delight if we manage to land Owen

I'll also do the same when Souey gets his marching orders.

And if we get something silly like 12 million for JJ.

NEWCASTLE will become the first English club to launch an official bid for Michael Owen.

News of the World can reveal Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd will this week offer Real Madrid £11million for the England striker (right).

Talks have already taken place between Newcastle and Owen's representatives SFX.

Toon boss Graeme Souness confirmed last night: "Like any Premier League manager I would like Michael Owen.

"You will have to ask the chairman what the latest situation is, but you can take it we have spoken to him."

Owen, 25, would prefer to join Manchester United or return to Liverpool — but he has not dismissed the idea of joining up with his old England strike partner, Alan Shearer.

United boss Alex Ferguson has shown no interest. But Liverpool chief Rafa Benitez appears to be warming to the idea.

Loan

Benitez is about to off-load Milan Baros to Aston Villa or Monaco — and is also willing to consider offers for Fernando Morientes.

That would clear the way for an emotional Kop return for Owen.

Neither Liverpool or United have approached Real — who rate Owen at £18million — and Newcastle hope they can exploit their lack of interest.

At the very least, they may be able to lure Owen with a one-year loan deal, giving him the chance to play alongside Shearer during the Toon skipper's farewell season.

Owen reveals Premiership interest

Manchester United and Newcastle have contacted Real Madrid with a view to signing striker Michael Owen.

Real have revealed Newcastle have shown the stronger interest but that the Old Trafford club are also in the frame.

"Newcastle are very interested in Owen," said a Real spokesman. "They are following him closely and are showing the most concrete interest.

"However, there are other sides showing an interest in Owen, including Manchester United."

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd had earlier confirmed his club have had initial talks with the Bernabeu outfit.

"We've had a discussion with Madrid but we won't be commenting further on any speculation," Shepherd told the club's official website.

Owen's future at Real is in doubt after Real signed Robinho and Julio Baptista which could move him down to fifth choice behing the two new arrivals as well as Ronaldo and Raul.

Newcastle are desperate to sign a striker but their attempts to land Owen may be hindered by the fact they are not involved in European competition this season.

The Magpies have lost Patrick Kluivert and Craig Bellamy from their attack and have had an offer for Fenerbahce forward Nicolas Anelka rejected.

But Manchester United can offer Owen the prospect of Champions League football and that is likely to give them the edge if it came down to a straight choice between the two for the player.

But the player's former club Liverpool have played down their interest in bringing him back to Anfield while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated signing a striker is not his priority.

Since it looks unlikely we'll sign him now, expect the next 6 months to see another fresh Souey/Freddy bashing about how this was just a "PR stunt".

I certainly won't be jumping on that bandwaggon this time, mainly because of this particular quote:

"We've had a discussion with Madrid but we won't be commenting further on any speculation," Shepherd told the club's official website.

Now if he'd come out and said exactly how much we'd bid etc... etc... like the whole Rooney episode then I'd probably agree that it's a PR stunt, but he appears to be keeping his cards a little closer to his chest this time round.

Still won't get him though! :o

Any proof that it's not?

The fact Real Madrid have confirmed this morning we're the only club to show any concrete interest in him?
