Fdisk and re-installation

My neighbour has had trouble for ages with his modem, and his PC, we have uninstalled some rubbish he had on there, got a new modem tested it and it is OK but still will not log on having tried freeserve, virgin and another disk.

We have absolutely no idea what is causing his PC to not connect when everything seems to be working. So he is going to copy all his photos etc onto disks and anything else he wants to keep and we will then fdisk his pc and re-install his windows 98SE and components from scratch.

Not having done this before, is there any pitfalls to look out for or any tips to help make a good job ??

He's a pensioner, so still wants to stick with w98 and dial up internet connections.

From memory you need a boot disk with FDISK on it, you boot from that, you then choose the option, DELETE PRIMARY DOS PARTITION, you then go back to the first menu and then choose the the option CREATE PRIMARY DOS PARTION, its very straightforward.

Im with Rob on this one, personally I dont think that it should require a format to fix connection problems.

Not wanting to sound patronising but have you checked everything?

what is actually happening ie to test the modem try using phone dialer (which I think is in accesories) and calling your mobile number, that will verify if the modem and line are ok, if that doesnt work then check daft things such as ensuring you havent got the "dial x for outside line" etc box ticked, that your not disconnecting before it has a chance to answer (theres a setting in modem that says how many rings before a connection, try upping that).

Also check if the servers need authentication

I'd take his modem and try it on your machine as well - you probably have an old dial up account around

thanks for the help lads.....here is the link the last time I asked, yes it's been dragging THAT long.....

He now has a new modem, which appears to work, it just won't go onto or into the site to register and login....any site .....

We have binned loads of basically crap programmes he had ie demos, some poxy wordpro extra that he didn't need. all sorts of things, just to see if something was clashing...I do have a feeling that despite re-installation of his windows disk, there is a file missing or corrupt somewhere

I will think about your replies and any others which are welcome

EDIT.

forgot - has anyone ever ran an SFC scan ?

Leazes - when you say it won't go into the site is it dialling up? - you should be able to hear it

If its not dialling then the problem lies in the computer/modem - if it is dialling then it 's the settings - sure you have the right number to dial, the correct password etc

Persumably the computer recognises the modem is there and its OK?

Looking at thr original email his dial up connection should NOT be set to LAN unless he has one - it should list his dialups in the drop down

Can you post all the settings he has on IE - everything on all the tabs...........

These things are a bastard once someone changes something I'm afraid

If he has a Yahoo account has he tried to access it over the web directly ?

It recognises the new modem, and dials up, but the screen just goes blank [white]

it does this using virgin dial up and also did using freeserve.

I did untick the LAN settings, which may have been connected to some stuff his son had been doing which we have now uninstalled.

He DID go straight into yahoo before it went tits up. I will get him to write down all his settings

His default connection is Freeserve for John.fsnet.co.uk

Automatically detect settings is ticked

In properties, he has phone nr 0845 6075602

Use Area Code is ticked

Connect using Intel R 537EP modem

Allowed Protocols - TCP/IP is ticked

Type of dial up server - PPP,Internet, windows NT server, windows 98

Start Terminal Screen minimized is ticked [what is this]

Multilink - Do not use additional devices is ticked

When trying to setup a new connection [from internet explorer]

=========================

he gets a message "failed to load the Internet Connection Wizard Component"

This is why I tried to install a different IP, in this instance Virgin, and why I decided to re-install windows 98, internet explorer etc, but with no change

When attempting to log onto the internet via internet explorer

========================================

"Failed to connect to remote computer, invalid name or password" despite setting up a new account off line [see above as unable to load Internet Connection Wizard]

He has also found a disk which he says he has had since he got the PC, and its a system restore disk which will restore the original settings........is this a better alternative to FDisk etc ?

All help appreciated.

He ran his restore disk that I described earlier. It actually worked a treat, all the crap he had has gone, and it boots up really fast. And looks great ie first class working order.

However, while the problems with connection wizard have gone, we tried to register with freeserve and tiscali and both times it said that it couldn't see the modem due to a hardware error/failure ..

The modem is new, it works, we also changed slots as it put it into com3 while coms 1 and 2 were both empty "with no modem installed", after changing the slot at the back of the PC it still said the modem is in com 3 !!!!!!

How do you change com slots ? Should the modem be in com 1 or com 2 ?

Is this a new modem that supports Plug 'n Play? Exactly what brand and type is it?

Check the Setup to see thet it is set to Telephone Modem

To change the Port setting go

Control Panel, Printers & other hardware, Modems, Select modem, click properties advanced, advanced Port settings and there is a drop down selector

you might want to reduce the settings for the receive and transmit buffers down form the normal HIGHEST setting

also check the default settings

After running the re-installation disk, and checking EVERYTHING again, I re-installed the new moden.....and hey presto.......

When the Internet Connection Wizard started working again, I guessed we were on the right track.

He's finally on tiscali. What the trouble has been, we will never know.

So I can put this problem to bed, and many thanks rob and PP for the help

What I have learned Rob is I wish I had used Norton Ghost when this PC was new [as I was told to do] before filling it with gigs of the stuff that accumulates over a couple of years
