I thought it was a criminal wasted opportunity to really boost our goal difference. completely went to sleep 2nd half. pleased with the 3 points, but still....

Yeah, this is where I am as well - whilst I'm glad we got the win, I'm hugely disappointed we didn't take the opportunity to rack up a cricket score. I get hooking Isak as others have said, I think he's got an hour in him before he needs to rest, but I didn't get the decision to hook Murphy - on a hat-trick against a god-awful side when we need to improve our GD.

Felt we went into game management way too early last night

I don’t mind it. They won the game in the first half then took their foot off the gas in the second half, with an eye on tougher assignments ahead.

The GD will look after itself if we keep winning games

Gordon's had a canny little mid season break, so hopefully he comes back refreshed and flying. Any of 3rd to 5th still possible (and lower obvs), 3rd plus a trophy would be amazing and lays a marker down for next season.

3rd and a trophy is arguably the best season of my lifetime, which feels weird to say given how up and down we’ve been at times, but it must surpass KK’s second place finish because there’s silverware and CL football at the end of it

I'd say it would be comfortably the best season of our lifetime. Honestly, if we finished 6th, hard to argue it's not the best season of our lives, even though it would bizarrely feel a bit disappointing.

BTW did I hear Cunt Bellamy right last night, he thinks Villa will end up winning the CL?!

He needs to lay of the ket

When we finished fourth we should've finished 3rd, when we lost the final we should've won it, both to the same team who we were better than that season but we didn't truly believe in ourselves and weak as the squad seems at the minute, it is still better than then, crucially as a club, players and manager aren't shying away from mentioning the CL whenever it's brought up as the realisation is we should be aiming for it and sometimes it's best to set these goals. We've got some tough games but so have the rest, win the next two then match the rest over the remaining games and it's ours, we won't win them all but neither will they.

Not really, he indicated that he felt they could win it, that they had a chance. He was being a pundit and the subject in that segment was who out of the chasing pack would qualify for CL, it was then possited that if Villa did win it they wouldn’t need to finish top 5.

“I’ve got a funny feeling with Aston Villa with the Champions League.

“I really do. I felt it in September, the manager’s experience of this level of a tournament. The way they’re organised.”

Presenter David Jones asked: “When you say you’ve got a funny feeling, do you think they can actually win the thing?”

Bellamy replied: “Honestly, I felt of all the British teams, Aston Villa’s the one to watch out in this tournament. Because of the manager, and they have players. They have real quality.”

I think it’s a bit mental to be upset about coasting through the second half given practically everyone who follows us and  has a bit of nouse thinks our squad is on the thin side. If we’d scored another 5 in the second half (unlikely) we’d only be 1 goal better off than Chelsea. Or half a point, if you think of it like that. Much better to play it safe in a match that’s already wrapped up and save the players for the remaining 8 games.

Palace might be the hardest game of the run in. It was last season (we should’ve twatted Man Utd too tbf) If we win both our next home games v those same teams by the time we get to Chelsea it could be all over bar the shouting…not sure if there’s been too many champions league places decided by goal difference over the years but looking forward to be proved wrong by some smart arse in front of a screen with too much time on their hands

Good chance Arsenal and Everton will be fully checked out by the time we play them too. We'd ideally not want to still be fighting for points ourselves at that stage, but if we are that wouldn't hurt.

The thing about Bellamy is he was evidently the token ex-Newcastle player for the studio last night, but he never comes across as that to me.

Look at the likes of Ferdinand, Barton, Beresford, Lee, Given - all ex-players who took NUFC to their hearts and continue to demonstrate so respectively, when taking part in punditry. I make the point about respectfully in contrast to the likes of Rio, Carragher, etc who should ridiculous levels of bias.

Bellamy doesn't seem to demonstrate any connection with the club - it's like his time at NUFC is a stain on his career.

Palace, like Bournemouth, is always a slog of a game, Bournemouth making it even more of a slog this year.

This is the same Bellamy who played for us more than he did any other club he played for.  He played almost double what Sir Les did for us and yet he's still a cunt.

Yeah Palace’s start was abysmal but they’ve come into form at the same time as they did last season. Very good away record, but there again Brentford were the same… basically win our home games and a 2 points from Villa/Brighton/Arsenal and we’re there I think we’re there…

He played for Liverpool in a CL final and was at Man City when they won their first title under Pelligrini so it’s easy for him to be a bit meh about Newcastle especially given the circumstances of his exit… there was a lot of football still in him…

Also think the other teams around us are dropping points they shouldn't be quite often too. I think the run of results might end up being more forgiving than we imagine.
