It should be perhaps pointed out that we were in the bottom 3 when Robson got sacked :cuppa:

his team was in decline, people were asking justifiable questions not only about this but also whether he was up to managing a bunch of young twats and that it might need someone a bit more capable of hauling them back in to line than a bloke in his 70s.

I don't recall at any point robson being hounded out, that's a mackem myth. I do recall though that supporters doubting robson being able to turn things round would've liked to have seen him moved 'upstairs" rather than sacked. not unreasonable I don't think.

the problem was shepherd's choice to replicate ferguson's hairdryer approach was the cunt souness, whose blackburn team was only one of three below us.

Where were we? 5/6 bottom?

16th on goal difference after 4 games. After the Villa result. Was he sacked the next day?
I’ve got vague recollections of drifting in and out of consciousness in the spare bedroom of my old house listening to it. Thinking we’d turned a corner then waking to hear Villa’s 4th go in.
Just say no, kids

The timing felt all wrong though that early in the season. I’ve heard from a couple of people including Shepherd’s cousin, who went to school with my dad, that Freddie S went on holiday with SBR. And that the plan was to tell him he was being moved upstairs. But then he didn’t have the heart to do it when it happened. I mean, who knows? I think the cousin would admit FS saying that didn’t necessarily mean it was true.

I'd agree the timing was wrong, to say nowt about the choice of replacement!

plenty of people thought he'd have gone in the summer though.

The timing of Robson’s sacking is/was always going to be wrong if there wasn’t a successor lined up. That’s how you end up an uncompetitive mess for the next decade. If he’d been sacked in early June and not late August it wouldn’t have mattered if Shepherd didn’t have someone ready on July 1st to start pre season. And given Shep’s subsequent and previous appointments he’d have fuckin struggled regardless :cuppa:

I was at Villa, think Kluivert scored his first goal for us. Robson might have dropped Bellamy?.. anyway, the highlight of the day was being stuck in traffic on the way home and listening to Kelly Holmes win her second gold medal in less than a week and realising that every fucker that part of the on the M6 that day was listening to it too :)

Robson dropped Shearer. I only know because I looked it up on .com to get the date (because I distinctly remembered it being the last game for Robson).

Remember watching that. Me and my lass could hear the people next door cheering too. Absolutely sensational performance and quite a beautiful moment after the bad luck she’d had in her career with injuries.

The young uns were supposedly out of control (I’m assuming Bellamy, Jenas and Dyer here)  but not sure if there was any substance in it. I can only remember one confirmed case where Dyer refused to play out of position.

I think Bobby was a bit too old for that at the time, he'd have put his back out. :good:

That was Titus, the other individual may have been a mate?

I’ll never forget reading the Sun’s account of what happened, they didn’t divulge the names but it went something something like…

”the player’s manager, a legend in the game, had to sit down after being informed of the incident”

Think that was the first ever Friday night game on Sky at Highbury. Bramble as usual had been in decent form for a month or so but inevitably (so it seemed to me) as soon as the tv cameras appeared he fell to peices, skied a clearance and Henry buried it. I think it was an equaliser after Jenas had scored a cracker to take the lead? Imagine letting that bunch of fuckin twats loose in London on a Friday night after a game though? :D
