I think Howe is trying everything but play Almiron (and Murphy). He is trying to shoehorn Big Joe, Little Joe, Gordon and arguably Barnes into the team but none of them are working.

Gordon is more comfortable on the right than most (but still not effective) so he ends up putting him back on the left when things aren’t working and then shoehorning someone else.

it must be now worth just sticking to someone (Barnes or Miggy) and giving them a few games to make it their own. They may be shit there but the team is settled and we can get some fluidity. A bit like when we had BdB at LB.  He did a job.

To be fair there was some wisdom in trying Gordon on the right.

swinging in a cross for Isak gave us three points against Arsenal.

old school but effective back in the day and we seem to have lost our confidence/ability to create compared to the last couple of seasons.

For me, Bruno needs to have a couple of games rest… I know it won’t happen but he’s not playing that well and it maybe stops us trying other formations

Not to mention the fact that Tino's delivery has been shocking this season.

He’s young, needs to be allowed to work through it from his favoured position, and let’s be honest, everyone’s delivery has been abysmal.

There is no evidence it won’t work now because we haven’t tried it consistently this season. It definitely worked last season though, as a team (and it’s a team game) we scored plenty of goals, the fact that those goals weren’t scored prolifically from the right is irrelevant, it’s about balance.

We now have major issues across the whole front line, we’ve gone from a weakness on the right to a weakness across the whole front third. I’d live with less than stellar RW if the rest of the team was firing, but they’re not. Play the players in their best positions, if that means Miggy or Murphy are currently your best available RW, play them or at least pick someone like Barnes and stick with him but for heaven’s sake leave Gordon out left, he’s our best LW.

he’s also our best RW, which is where your argument falls apart.

Neither Murphy nor Miggy are good enough to start at right wing. I agree that Howe needs to decide what his best 11 is and give them a run of games. It’s fucking obvious that our best 11 doesn’t include the two right wingers signed by Rafa

Bollocks, he’s our best LW and it’s his best position and that’s where he should play. Our goal return with him playing out of position as RW would tend to support my argument.

Gordon should play LW and some other fucker plays right, whoever that may be.

Miggy Almiron and Jacob aMurphy should be nowhere near the starting eleven, sorry

It’s not Gordon’s fault we didn’t recruit properly in the summer btw. I’d rather he was starting on the left too but big Joe has consistently performed well at LW.  Miggy and Murphy have both been consistently shit at RW, Miggy’s brief purple patch aside.

I was one of those who thought Miggy did enough to do a job at RW after the season we finished 4th. I was wrong. He has returned to form. And Murphy, well. If he’s the answer I don’t know what the question is

The thing with putting Joe at LW is why are we doing that? So he gets in? So he gets in ahead of Little Joe to appease little Joe? We need to stop this square pegs and round hole stuff.

With this, Willock probably also needs to be on the move along list.

His decision making isn't to the level it needs to be.

Where are all the chances and goals we’ve created whilst big Joe has “consistently performed” at LW? compared to the chances and goals we created when Gordon was LW with big Joe LMF and the supposedly useless player(s) on the right ?

We must be banging them in with consistent Big Joe LW and Gordon on the right (our best RW you said). Sorry I must have missed all those goals/chances, how silly of me.

We have disrupted/weakened multiple positions to address a weakness in one (which the changes haven’t addressed) and as a team our attacking is actually worse.

Addressing that weakness absolutely should be done through recruitment, but until it is, you should play your best players in their best positions and make do with the best you have available at other positions.

some of our best attacking football when we finished 4th came with Joe and Willock down our left so I understand why the manager is trying it again. Gordon has looked better at right wing than anyone else tried there this season. He hasn’t created or scored  much from the left or the right this year but nor has anyone. The entire team is underperforming

If we revert to Miggy at RW it really underscores the failure to improve that position in the summer. We’re trying to engineer a move away for him in January. It would be a desperate move.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

In some ways yes.  We still have a decent defensive record and Pope has been decent.  Its going forward and it coincides with the fucking about with Gordon's position and the omission of Miggy and Murphy playing.

Defence isn’t, but they’re all but a settled unit.

We didn’t have Gordon when big Joe/Willock were on the left. We didn’t have Willock last season when we were scoring for fun.

Gordon has been distinctly average on the right, so maybe it’s an idea to play him consistently in his best position, just a thought ? He’s more likely to be brilliant there than on the right.

If we’re at our best on the left we can afford to be average on the right. It’d be great to be strong there too but we can’t upgrade the right just now so you have to make do with what you’ve got.

Bleating about “we should have bought someone” doesn’t fix the here and now, as Wyki said - stop putting square pegs in round holes.

I don’t particularly give a fuck who he plays on the right but I do know our best left hand side is Hall, Big Joe and Gordon and baring injury they should always play there.

You can only play with the cards you’ve been dealt. If Miggy or Murphy are all you’ve got, that’s all you’ve got.

Playing devil's advocate but Hall barely played LB last season, our best left side was actually BDB, Big Joe and Gordon.

yeah, I agree. Defensively we’ve been solid, despite missing our best centre half all season through injury.

the main problem for me is teams have figured us out. We’re a very good transitional team but haven’t figured a way out to break down a low block. Would a new right winger have fixed that? Maybe, maybe not. Eddie has got a lot of work to do on the training ground, whether it’s working out what his best 11 is and sticking to it instead of chopping and changing every week, or switching to a different formation.

On the latter point, he’s slightly restricted because he’s recruited players to fit his preferred 4-3-3 formation. A 4-2-3-1 could be the answer to breaking down stubborn defences, and could be the best way to get Tonali and Bruno functioning together in midfield as they have both played the double pivot for other teams. Problem there is we don’t have a natural number 10.
