It isn’t just that simple. Tactically we’ve failed to progress.

Much of our early success was based on having on not having much of the ball and hitting teams on the break. If you look at our best results this season, against the likes of Spurs, City, Arsenal and Forest, they’ve all set up to have a go at us and as a result we’ve had chances.

Our worst results have come against sides happy to sit deep and give us possession. We can’t seem to find a way to break these teams down. It’s a combination of not having the players capable of doing it and a manager unable to find a system that allows us to score against these ‘lesser’ sides.

I don't think Howe is beyond criticism, I just think his options are severly limited with the current squad much of which comprises intensity based players who are limited otherwise. Teams were always going to figure out how to play against that, and we just havent adapted in turn. To what extent Howe could have addressed that through coaching methods can be debated but he's already gotten an insane amount of output from limited players, to expect him to pivot them now to a different playing style is wishful thinking imo.

What I was looking forward to this season was talented players stepping up and showing how good they can be.  Your Brunos, Isaks and Gordons. They've all been very disappointing in general so far. The big question for me is if that is down to our system and tactics or is something not quite right in the heads right now. Another couple of months of this and I think more serious questions can be asked of Howe but let's not forget that in a season when we've weakened our squad as others have strengthened around us he's still managed to keep us competitive and a few decent results from climbing up the table very quickly.

I expect a hammering on Wednesday and knee jerk all hell to break loose reactions though

One thing this thread has proved, is that I have learnt from the Guéhi thread and now submit sensible votes.

27 votes to 1 is what I would have hoped would be the split. It is comforting after seeing the title and seeing 6 pages.

Maybe this is another learning moment and we should learn when to engage?

I notice, on Twitter, that there are some Villa fans (I think similar to our 'fans') calling out Unai Emery, the mind boggles.

Last season when we had supposedly totally shit right wingers, we had a side that created/scored for fun, sadly we also conceded at a rate that wasn’t fun at all.

This season we’ve had Pope back and a fairly settled back four and have (so far) been pretty frugal at the back. Up front we have tried just about everyone at RW, except those shit right wingers who played when we scored for fun, now we look unbalanced and static up front and are creating fuck all.

Maybe there’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Makes you think.

I think Howe is trying everything but play Almiron (and Murphy). He is trying to shoehorn Big Joe, Little Joe, Gordon and arguably Barnes into the team but none of them are working.

Gordon is more comfortable on the right than most (but still not effective) so he ends up putting him back on the left when things aren’t working and then shoehorning someone else.

it must be now worth just sticking to someone (Barnes or Miggy) and giving them a few games to make it their own. They may be shit there but the team is settled and we can get some fluidity. A bit like when we had BdB at LB.  He did a job.

Well let's think about it then. Where did the goals come from on the right hand side? None of them were scoring prolifically so let's look at assists. Almiron had three, Murphy eight and Trippier had 11. The problem is that Almiron has been shite for over a year now, Murphy was given a chance at the start of the season and offered nothing while looking well out of form when coming on as a sub since and Trippier's form fell off a cliff towards the end of last season and still hasn't managed to supplant Tino at RB.

So yes it's obvious that we have major issues on the right hand side but you can't just go back to what worked before when the evidence shows you that it won't work now.

what’s the answer then? He has literally tried everything but putting Miggy back in. Whilst it would also be my last option I think he probably has to try it soon. With Trippier back they form a good partnership and we can control games better with those two in it.

I think Miggy is definitely being pushed towards a January exit and Trippier's head still doesn't appear to be right. Howe will know much more about what is going on and how their form is in training than we do so if he's opting not to choose that option then there must be a reason behind it.

makes me think that the 19 who voted we should be going all out to buy a bright and shiny new right winger instead of a defender are wise and knowledgeable, whereas the other 14 should probably start watching tiddlywinks or something instead.

just saying.

There is no evidence it won’t work now because we haven’t tried it consistently this season. It definitely worked last season though, as a team (and it’s a team game) we scored plenty of goals, the fact that those goals weren’t scored prolifically from the right is irrelevant, it’s about balance.

We now have major issues across the whole front line, we’ve gone from a weakness on the right to a weakness across the whole front third. I’d live with less than stellar RW if the rest of the team was firing, but they’re not. Play the players in their best positions, if that means Miggy or Murphy are currently your best available RW, play them or at least pick someone like Barnes and stick with him but for heaven’s sake leave Gordon out left, he’s our best LW.

Howe's the one watching the kid in training. If he doesn't think he's ready, he's not ready.

He hasn't made too many mistakes bringing the other younger squad members through.

I can't speak to @thebrokendoll's political leanings, but you're right he could at least iron that fucking purple hoodie.

Tino at RW with Tripps at RB?
