Gordon best player? Playing in the middle, which in his words, he considers his best position.

Missed a penalty, missed the one on one, missed the free header

.... but oh he raaaaaan around a lot:lol:... definitely best player...

Farken hell, English bias in full effect. :lol::lol:

His link up play was quality, he won a lot of free kicks turning their defence, he was a constant threat in behind which stopped Everton team get up the pitch. AND he worked his arse off again. His shooting was poor - which let him down.

I don’t see any quotes of him saying that’s his preferred position.

That's because they're in magic land

That's Gordon's worst performance for us. He should've scored a hattrick. A penalty, a free header 5-yards out, and a one-on-one 10-yards out. What an absolute dog's breakfast of a performance from him. It isn't often you can attribute a result to a single player, but given his lack of quality in front of goal today I think it's fair to say that he has cost us two points. You'd imagine he accumulated more xG than Everton's entire team. Going back to Everton clearly plays on his mind. In fact, we have to recognise that going away from St. James' in general has a markedly detrimental effect on his performance. Today was only the worst example owing to the added circumstances of it being his former club.

And the rest of our attacking players weren't far behind him. We created heaps of chances and almost had free reign in the midfield. But too many wayward passes, too many poor touches in in the final third, and our finishing was truly abysmal.

I was also slightly perplexed by the decision to substitute Barnes. He hadn't had the worst game of the front three up to that point. In fact, I'd argue he was our best of the front three by default in having a quiet if completely unremarkable match considering how bad Murphy & Gordon were performing. But most importantly, for me, Barnes was the only natural finisher on the park today. In a game that clearly was waiting for a moment of quality from someone to finish one of our many chances, he was the clear candidate to get the job done. I have only just finished watching the replay so perhaps he was injured or had a niggle. If not then it's a strange decision for me. I can only assume that Howe valued the added defensive output of Murphy and so kept him on instead. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Of course, we also lacked a bit of luck here and there. If Bruno's effort goes in from the corner it's a different game. And it was a solid performance defensively. And further praise where it is due, at least we avoided throwing it away altogether at the end like we would've last season. But really a point against a side that offered us that many opportunities to score and countered with very little going forward themselves is two points dropped.

A truly uninspiring run of results from Gloomy. We've moving from Charles III, to Charles I, to Charles II of Spain.

I found the decision to sub Barnes, our top scorer and best finisher on the pitch, and leave Murphy and Miggy on just bizarre. We were chasing a goal without a proper centre forward and he takes off our biggest goal threat.

I’m sick of watching Murphy and Miggy now. The obvious weakness at RW is glaring. really hope that’s the next position we upgrade. It’s the lack of cutting edge that’s killing is.

Agree about Gordon too - second year running he’s had a stinker at goodison, essentially costing us two points. His off the ball work was decent and missing a pen is one thing but I can’t believe he didn’t hit the target when he was clean through. He has to score that one.

Should have won. Last week’s draw felt like a win, this one feels like a loss. The king demands a reaction against Brighton.

Miggy wasn't bad when he was brought on. He did more than Murphy and was a bigger threat. I can only assume Barnes had a knock. I still would have brought on Osula and taken off Murphy at the same time. Put Miggy right and Osula up front and kept Gordon left.

I must have been watching a different game to some, I would have had Barnes off at half time (for Willock) as he was utterly ineffective IMO. They cut off his avenues to cut inside and shoot and he offered little else, delivered one decent cross that I recall.

I can find lots of quotes of him talking about it, heres one example

I fucking hate giving that Mackem cunt the chance to be the hero - I know it is hindsight as others have said but I would have given the pen to Schar.

Fuck knows what they do in training but it scares me how shit the vast majority of our players are at finishing.

The right of kings to start the match thread comes with the responsibility for performance. This is on you. So is the transfer window. And the 2008 economic crash. And John Lennon being shot. And post colonial decline in the UK etc etc :cuppa:

Barnes was taken off because he was playing as if he was devoid of energy. No good saying Fab should’ve took pen. If he’d missed same folk would’ve said “BUT GORDON SCORED LAST WEEK V MAN CITY MAN!!!” We played fairly well including the subs. We didn’t create hatfuls of chances but a fit striker would’ve probably seen us win. The reluctance to give Osula the last 10 mins to get on the end of something is strange. Happy with sixth, 8 league goals is a concern…

precisely this.

howe pissed me off yesterday to he honest, we dominated the game but couldn't hit a fucking cows arse with a banjo, had a million corners and still failed to test the mackem cunt at all.

completely fail to see why when you pay £15m for a young 3rd striker you'd not use him in these circumstances when the other 2 fuckers are missing. we brought on 4 subs and left the k8d sat n his arse all afternoon.

very much 2 points chucked away and our record away from home continues to be woeful.

in hindsight we should have tried to buy a third choice striker the manager was confident enough  to use this season rather than a development player for the future. It’s a luxury we couldn’t afford when our two main strikers are injury prone. Craig Hope points out we haven’t won a game that Isak and Wilson have both missed this season. Our general play yesterday was pretty good. We were the better team and deserved to win and we probably would have if we had a finisher up front.

Gordon worked his arse off yesterday and pressed well but his finishing cost us two points. He has to convert one of those chances man.

I don’t blame Gordon btw. It’s not his fault. He’s a winger, not a CF. It’s failure to back Howe in the last couple of windows that’s costing us. We don’t have enough depth across the front line. We’re stacked at LW but rely on two injury prone CFs with a kid in reserve who the manager doesn’t trust yet and no top class RW.

well, to a point yes but we apparently had £70m to spend on Guehi so there was some money to spend. Anyway, we know how that one ended.

Gordon had a great game.

I said that he should not be taking the pen when he stepped up. You could see that he was not taking the pressure well and the shot was really poor. It was clearly a poor shot rather than a good save.

His header was bizarre at first glance but I thought the replay showed that he was in front of the ball.

I think the 1 on 1 he took one touch too many but he is not a CF.

I think he had a great game.

With a striker we win this. I think Osula would have been better in this game than Wimbledon.

I found myself frustrated with Howe for a decision he made, not playing Osula. However, each time I have found myself frustrated with Howe for not using x player e.g. Hall and they come in, they seem to not be ready. Then we see them develop into really solid players later on. This makes me feel Osula will more than likely be a solid player for us but he is not there yet and playing him would be detrimental in the medium to long term with no clear short term win.

The manager wanted Guehi.

It's not PSR "to a point", it's PSR. The manager has been backed. Framing it as a failure to back the manager is just plain wrong.

His finishing was poor, I've said that, but other than that he was everywhere. He had a good game.

He was playing as our main striker. He missed three gilt edged chances, a striker can’t have had a good game after doing that. If Pope had dropped three clangers you couldn’t claim he had had a good game.
