Once upon a time the argument against showing all matches (and the 3pm blackout) was the impact it would have on lower league teams. However, when you have overseas providers showing every game, and we live in a technologically advanced world where those providers can only sit by helplessly while pirates dish out the games en masse to a massive market at next to nowt - you'd think the greed of the premier league / sky would like to take back a piece of that market.

If I could have every Newcastle match (and only Newcastle matches) for say £20 - £30 a month I'd snap their hand off. They could make a fucking fortune but they seem to have no interest.

It's money though, isn't it? Sky and TNT can pay £6.7bn for the Premier League because they can pass the costs onto the customers and the advertisers. Would the PL get £6.7bn from users and advertisers if there was a subscription based PL app?

There's also the infrastructure required to handle such an undertaking.

the size of the market is potentially much bigger if you offer bespoke content for fans of different clubs. TV has changed but football/sports in general is one of the few remaining to catch up.

The yank broadcasters have a similar setup to what I was talking about with american football where you can pick and choose which game to watch. I’d be amazed if the PL doesn’t figure it out eventually. The old arguments for the TV blackout don’t really stand up anymore given stadiums are full for every fixture and for supporters of many clubs it’s practically impossible to get a ticket

I thought the blackout was to encourage us to go and watch Gateshead/ Blyth/ South Shields. It ain't working for me though.

I don’t know if it’s been advertised as such but they couldn’t give a flying fuck about boosting or knocking a couple of hundred off the attendances for clubs like that.
And even if they did and that was the reason it doesn’t work. I go and watch Heaton Stannington a lot and if they’ve got a 3 o’clock home Saturday ko and Newcastle have too, it impacts their attendance quite a bit. And that’s whether Newcastle are home or away. Because of the reasons others have mentioned and the ease in which you can watch through foreign providers

I know what he said, I just find it hard to believe, that’s robbery, and as an accountant cunt you should know that.

Sky Sports + looked very similar to the yank products when I was watching the (admittedly dodgy version of the) stream last night. Even the half time set up of showing the pitch, and flashing up the stats with occasional highlights was very similar to the optus sports, NBC sports etc. It might be them testing the waters with it.

I think you and I have very different definitions for "robbery" tbh. If a mugger rocked up and held me at knife point, did a few kickie ups and stuffed £70 in my pocket I'd be relatively happy. I'd even happily take a bit of a stabbing for that kind of bargain.

I’m not sure you understand the principles of mugging tbh

I disagree. All movies, all sports, all entertainment for £70 a year? Less than £6 a month for packages that'd legally cost north of £100pm

£40 p.a. Plus £5 each for a phone and ipad app. Is just a wee bit better (i.e. not robbery)

Yes they would. The £6.7bn is spread over four years so roughly £1.8bn a season.

Sky have about 18m customers. Nearly everyone I know only have it for the sport, primarily football. If 12 million of those customers were willing to subscribe to a new PL channel/app for £30 a month then that's £4.2bn a year they'd be raking in.

In that case, I wonder what's stopping the Premier League cobbling together a PL+ platform.

Simon Jordan has been banging on about it in the past. It makes sense to me but would it be seen as anti-competitive under competition laws?

How does the NFL network get around that, I wonder?
