wykikitoon 19774
Oz One of my fave series. Even watching it now the political stuff in it relates to now. Although the episode of them mixing with Mackems does my head in. GTFO.
Alex 34685
Think it works well because they’re a proper rag-tag bunch thrown together. Like after a while they become fiercely loyal to each other but Barry and Oz would never ordinarily be mates in real life because they’re chalk and cheese. The former being much better read but terminally boring. Oz, especially in series one and two is essentially a loutish piss head. But with a witty charm. Dennis and Bomber are older and world weary, especially Dennis. Neville the dweeby home bird, Wayne the brash cockney looking to shag anything with a pulse. Then Moxie’s just a total outsider with his convicted arsonist past. Oz was probably the funniest but Timothy Spall is brilliant as Barry

But aye, he’s the one chopped up by the propeller. I think he’s a different character in the bar at the beginning when Marion has a drinking competition too? thebrokendoll 9016
oz. superb bit of casting, even if it was a bit random how jimmy nail got the part. barry runs him a very close 2nd mind, could never understand how wayne was supposed to be such a chick magnet, but this bit here where he takes barry under his wing on the pull is a classic scene....

It works because they're just incredibly believable characters. Everybody knows an Oz, a Neville, and a Barry, also all the others. Don't think I can recall a series ever which got the casting so perfect as well. Add in the humour and the first two series are untouchable. Fucking hell, I've just noticed something. The hiatus between AF2 and AF3 felt like a lifetime, with all the characters aging and having grown up kids etc. Not only is the gap in years between AF3 and now greater, it's also even greater since AF2 pile of shite AF4. Jesus.

Tdansmith 3192
Some Auf Wiedershen Pet trivia........ When the Berlin wall was pulled down by German citizens, a British journalist found some interesting graffiti. It read "Built by Germans, demolished by Oz". Soon after the series began transmission, Newcastle United played at home to Liverpool. The fans began to chant "Oz is harder than Yosser!" "Bomber" (Pat Roach) was absent from several episodes in season one, as Roach was away filming scenes for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), which was also being shot at Elstree Studios. In the first series there is a non speaking eighth member of the hut. Val McLane (Norma) and Jimmy Nail are real life brother and sister. Soon after the second series ended, Tyne Tees Television produced an AIDS awareness show in the form of a mini episode. Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail reprised their roles in Educating Oz (1986), a 25-minute show. Timothy Spall was born and raised in London despite playing "Barry" from the West Midlands. Whereas, Pat Roach, who played "Bomber" from Bristol, is from Birmingham. The filming in Germany (in the cities of Hamburg and Düsseldorf) for the entire first series only actually lasted for ten days. Before shooting in the UK began, the cast were sent on a practical bricklaying course.

Before shooting in the UK began, the cast were sent on a practical bricklaying course. Here’s a few more. Gary Holton ( Wayne), replaced Dave Vanian in the Damned for a short spell on tour. He also auditioned to replace Bon Scott in AC/DC. Auf Wiedersehen translates literally as “go widdershins”, which is Scotch for anti-clockwise. It was chosen as the title of the show because bricklayers traditionally work in an anticlockwise direction. Tim Healy has rattled both ends of Denise Squelch and survived. All the Newcastle born actors on the show are secretly massive lads fans. So was Pat Roach, Moxey and Barry. * some of the above may stretch the definition of “facts”… some, but not all.
