Rate this summer transfer window

I understand that the unintended consequences of the current PSR model means that the most profitable source of income is by selling your homegrown player. And I get that we're fishing in a very small pond. And I understand that we don't have European football to entice a player with. 

 

But this is the bit I don't get; for people of that level, working on 2, 3, 8 potential deals shouldn't be beyond them. I know I have to have 3 workable solutions to present whenever I'm tasked with creating something. All 3 have to be good to go when the final decision is made, so I have to iron out all the particulars for each. I can do this and still dick about on here for most of the day.

Transfer business does not have to be restricted to the transfer window. They had months to sort out the Tosin deal, the Guehi deal, the Elanga deal and so on. The second Tosin signed for Chelsea, we should have seen if Palace were open to doing business around our price. If not, don't chase it, leave it on the back burner while you approach other targets like Thiaw or Samakin. If none of the right CBs are available at the right price at the beginning of the window then shift focus to another position while keeping communication open with the CBs' clubs. If we could have agreed a fee with Forest for Elanga, we'd need not have signed a 4th choice 'keeper for £20m. Also, Almiron would likely have been more keen to leave had we his replacement in already.

Then if Palace are more open to our price at the end of the window go back to them at that point.

 

Vlachdimos and Pliers aside, I think we've made some sensible signings; a few kids for the youth teams, a young striker who shows promise and can provide more depth up front, a utility Premier League defender, an experienced keeper for coaching and so on

 

And hey, at least we got rid of the two department stores; Fraser and Lewis.

I'm sure they did work multiple scenarios/deals but we're only interested in players who would significantly improve the squad, not just minor upgrades. There's also the dimension (which we have no insight into) of players who we maybe covet who will be available next summer and rather than take a half measure we just keep our powder dry.

 

I would have preferred a CB now because we sure as hell will need one next summer, but I'll trust the pro's.

If you read Caulkins spiel from the Athletic it’s a variation on this. They could’ve been working on deals for months as you suggest but when the TD is appointed just as pre season started that would have left the recruitment team in limbo for some time until they received some concrete direction. Tosin joined Chelsea on 7 June so that left a month till Mitchell arrived when very likely not a lot happened. The vain approach for Friedman before the season ended would’ve stalled things too.  The point at which our window was doomed strongly appears to me was when Ashworth went on gardening leave. It wasn’t inevitable that it’d be a crock of shit at that point but with hindsight it can all be traced back to that point. Dealing with Parish at three different points in the window probably wasn’t a good idea either but again that’s probably down to lack of leadership/guidance.

Putting Ashworth aside I just don't think this would have happened on Mandy's watch. Eales may have more experience in football but Mandy was a negotiator and proved that she could do deals but also knew when to walk away. The problem we had this summer was not knowing when to throw the towel in.

You'd hate it if I was in charge of recruitment. Instead of signing that experienced centre back we need, we'd just sign a dozen 18yr old Mezzalas from South America with "potential" and "good baseline performance metrics". And sell anyone who was over 27.

There's going to be a new issue in play over the next 2 windows. We've got 11 players out of contract in 12 months time.  7 of them were first team regulars last season with 239 games between them. 
 

It's a fine line between not giving contracts to players you think you can improve upon, and decimating the squad.

I think had there been decent interest for any, they would have been replaced this summer.

Has Dúbravka not been replaced by some pensioner from Birmingham City or a Greek international (who cost £20 Million - twice what we paid for Pope btw) from Forest ?

 

For that matter Lascelles by Kelly and some bloke who has never scored for Wilson?
