i mean they're in the tino/hall mould - players with potential in other words- rather than expensive players with loads of experience who stroll straight into the first team. players who howe will want to develop before he starts them regularly but still good enough to come off the bench to see a game out or provide cover for injuries. there are players out there that fit this brief and mitchell has a track record in this area. i presume he was brought into to identify this type of player for less than we paid on tino/hall.

 

even in the summer i expect mitchell to sign a few like this - it won't be a clutch of £40-50m players to slot straight into the first team and i'm not expecting otherwise.

okay, well if we're only losing miggy it isn't ideal, but it's better than 2-3 going out with none coming in. we'll have to hope murphy avoids injury and that someone like barnes or willock can step up and provide cover at RW when needed.

jokes aside, i accept the psr situation has stiffed us this window (again). and while i'm disappointed to lose a player without a replacement to provide cover - not even a short term loan - i get it. 

 

i do think it undermines howe's efforts, which have been brilliant in the circumstances. that's three consecutive windows now where he's had next to no help with recruitment.   

 

it could be a genius move if the squad continues to remain largely free of injuries, we scrape CL and then go big on transfers in the summer. it feels like a punt albeit one that has been forced on us by the financial regs.

 

i hope we don't live to regret it. it might only take a few injuries for it to easily turn into another 'nearly season', losing in the cup final and stumbling to 7th or 8th.

The truth is, even if Miggy had stayed, Murphy getting injured would have fucked us. Cos Miggy isn't playing anywhere near the level Murphy is and, whilst he's always a willing runner, is more often than not a dead end to any promising attack. 

 

Obviously it'll be rose tinted spectacles time if Murphy gets injured, and everyone's hankering for purple patch Miggy. But if he'd stayed, we'd more than likely have been treated to brown patch Miggy.

We can always play Tino RW. Offers little offensively but then again neither did Miggy.

We could play anyone there really if thats the low bar we are going for.  Miggys build up play has always been fairly decent to me. His finishing has always let him down and he doesn't have the blistering pace anymore.  It's probably the right time for him to move on (in terms of finance) and we'll have to take the risk Murphy doesn't do his collarbone in again or worse, starts playing to his true ability soon.

Thing is, we've got into 5th, level on points with 4th. We've not needed Almiron or Kelly (played 356 minutes in total). I mean, Krafth and Trippier have played more than Almiron and Kelly have respectively. Almiron is not a vital cog in the machine. The scant minutes he's been getting could easily be given to Sanusi or Osula or whomever.

 

So, with that in mind, I don't think it's as risky a gamble as it's being made out to be. It's not like we're selling Dan Burn. 

 

Mitchell doesn't get an endless free pass, but it bears repeating. He joined late into the summer window, winter window is always a difficult one to bring in quality, and we've got little PSR wriggle room to do business in January anyway.

the hayden comparison is bizarre as we are not shopping in the bargain bin anymore and i'm not advocating signing sub-bar players on long contracts. but if we do lose the players rumoured then mitchell needs to start doing his job - if psr constraints mean more players with potential rather than established and expensive stars that would go straight into the first team, fine. it is a numbers game as much as as it is about signing first team ready players and it would be criminal to deny eddie the sufficient squad depth to keep challenging for champions league spots after such a good start to the campaign.

We've lost one (and older Miley) the others rumoured are covered, Targett (not looking like happening) we have Kelly and Longstaff (again unlikely) where we have Miley.

 

We need depth at RW either via someone better than Murphy or someone younger who will eventually be better than Murphy.

 

You used the "bodies through the door" phrase, we do need that, but only the right bodies. If we have to wait for those, so be it, even if we can achieve a beneficial sale towards future buying power.

It’s possible he has finally reached a high level of performance (and can sustain it) but if I was a statistician I’d say the previous 370 appearances, rather than the last 10 would suggest this is a purple patch.
