Let's not pretend Nuno is a tactical genius and has unlocked the potential in Chris Wood.

Wood's stats show he has been bang average at every club he's played at. He had a point to prove yesterday and we were fucking hopeless at the back.

At the same time, if you are changing your style of play, you need time on the training ground to work on it.

Which we have not had this season.

I'm not worried about results like yesterday, we wont remember them in a few years when we are challenging for honours.

Equally this season may be significant for Eddie, but the club is on an upward trajectory.

Wholly agree. Had we had a fuller squad, I wouldn't have been surprised to see two teams alternating between fixtures. Wilson and Barnes and Longstaff one game, Isak Gordon and Tonali the next. One half of the squad spending a week preparing for the league or cup game, the other preparing for the Champions League or games against tougher league opponents.

We're only 1pt behind where we were at this stage last season, which given our piss poor luck with injuries and drawn opponents, is no mean feat.

This is a very important point. This run of games since the last international break has been play -recovery - play on repeat. Last season we were supremely well drilled but there hasn't been the time or the personnel this year to allow it.

Fatigue, of body and brain is obviously a huge factor but the best thing about January is not only some rest, and hopefully some proper returning to fitness, but the chance to get them all mentally prepared.

Worst thing about January is probably losing a load of games, but I fully expect it to turn around have a late season charge up the table.

And a decent bash at the cup

Aye. If we get past the Mackems  of course which is bang in the middle of this bad run.

We can transition to a less intense possession based game but there are players in the team still who despite their other qualities give the ball away too much, Miggy and Longy being the two main culprits. Although Trippier seems to have seen this as a challenge recently.

doing my head in yesterday this was.

I also find it incredible that no matter where the fuck he happens to be on the pitch at the time of a corner/free kick/throw in, even if it means he has to run over a 100 yards trippier has to take every set piece. no wonder he looks fucked. is it written in to his contract?

we must have some fucker else able to kick a dead ball? it's hardly like we're scoring a boat load from corners as it is.

pissed off about yesterday,

hungover 6am start, pulled round enough by 10ish to contemplate a sausage and egg mcmuffin only to find the macdonalds at durham services had been invaded by 4 bus loads of fucking scabs.

got to the grosvenor casino just before 11 (still hungry) to find the fucking place didn't open till 12 and so a 100% winning league record (I missed the liverpool game) of a first pint in there was about to end. ominous sign.

shit kick off time for a beer, shit match, shit atmosphere. shit run of fixtures coming up.

merry post christmas!

Gordon is a decent corner taker.

Miggy yesterday was fucking dogger.  He was running into his own players, second half tried to score an own goal.  He must have been fucking arseholed still.

Shit day all round. I remember now why I generally don't drink much nowadays, probably shouldn't drink at all given my medical history. My serotonin levels are rock bottom, gonna have to drive to the in-laws in county Durham soon without the crutch of a drink to take off the edge. Depression, anxiety. Then I'll have insomnia tonight. Oh, and Liverpool away to look forward to ffs. Fucking hate this time of year. Humbug fuck sticks

He is, by far, the best set piece taker in the squad.

I know. Football's become too big a part of my life so when it's shit I go on a downer. Going to knock the alcohol and caring about footy on the head for a bit. Except the mackem match.

Yes it worked last season for a number of reasons, one being oppositions for some reason didn't realise they were a high intensity/pressing teams - pundits and opposition fans kept saying we were defended deep like we did under cabbagehead. Emery realised this wasn't the case and hence why they skinned us in their beige stadium. This season opposition teams and fans have caught up and tactically know how to play against us, add in the fact the team has run out of legs and Eddie's still trying to beat the dead horse to get more out of them, if you can't see that's a problem, you are clearly not watching.

No I actually do agree with you, I just don't think Eddie had too much choice in tactics with these players. Just taking Almiron as an example, if you take the energy out of his game he's an utterly mediocre player at best. And we're seeing that now he's running on fumes.

Earlier on in the season I think we saw evidence of the trigger pressing system Fish referenced. Even before the injuries and fixture congestion it was clear we were less aggressive in the press than last season. I think Howe did realize some changes this year were necessary but with how things have unfolded he's had his hands tied.

I do think he has to take some responsibility of course. If Burn keeps starting over Tino there's serious question marks. And in general I do agree he has to evolve the squad and tactics now. It will take time and some backing in the transfer window. In hindsight the summer business has turned out to be 2/10 when most of us said 8/10 in September.

Bit harsh considering what's happened with Tonali and Barnes.

he would be, no fucker else is allowed to compete with him.

in fairness schar probably blew his chance to be the go to free kick taker yesterday.

I need to get my mate mick from blyth signed up on here, what he lacks in your knowledge of stats he trumps you in his ability to recall in precise, vivid detail every single one of trippier's corners..... from the second it leaves his boot to the second it leaves the penalty area without a goal.

he'll argue with you till your ears bleed that trippier takes shit corners and believe me, he'll convince you.

See I don't blame Trippier for our lack of threat from set pieces, it's the lumps he's aiming at that don't do what they should. We've got a tall squad, but are so often beaten in the air by defenders. The best corners are where we reposition with a short ball then loft in a ball from somewhere other than the corner flag.

For what it's worth I think Tonali is good with a dead ball, but we haven't got to see that much at all.

Yep that's why I said most of us were happy in September. But it was always a stretch going into this season with 2 first team signings. Great that Tino has stepped up at least.

You can blame FFP, and by all accounts we can't spend much in January either. So if we're having to play the long term game I hope the owners remember that if they decide to judge Howe.

Hindsight is wonderful

Tino was great business, Tonali and Barnes are TBD, Minteh is playing well in Holland,  leaving Hall as the only Question mark.

I don't think we did bad business, we maybe just prioritised the wrong positions

If we go out of the FA Cup sharpish it’ll all be about securing those vital 12 points to stay up. 😙
