Southgate gives his critics plenty of ammunition with his selection choices and his somewhat cautious tactics but it's difficult to argue with his results. His record at major tournaments is SF, Final and QF. Who was the last England manager to achieve that? In international football you only have the opportunity to win two tournaments in four years, not doing so isn't in itself a failure.

The more pertinent question to ask is who would replace him? Potter is the only stand out candidate and he hasn't won anything in his career. International management isn't something that attracts top managers any more which is why it's a place for mid-level coaches and those in semi-retirement. Southgate isn't a great manager but who is any better that England could attract?

Season 7 Wow GIF by Outlander

What is the reason why all these good English coaches are not  and largely have very seldom been appointed to the top clubs that are capable of winning the premier league then? It’s not like that one of them who has been perceived to be average has then taken the national job and proved everyone wrong?…. Or is it? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I can understand playing Phillips. As the 4-2-3-1 (in theory at least) allows 3 attacking players without surrendering much in the way of defensive stability. Maguire though? It’s not even like there aren’t clearly better options. It was fucking weird seeing Southgate defend the selection in the press conference ahead of the Ukraine match. Then he was having a pop at the England fans booing him onto the pitch for the Scotland match. Booing your own player is pathetic behaviour but that’s not the point. Especially as it’s basically defending the decision to bring him on. Which immediately handed momentum to the opposition in a game where England were in total control. I also 100% agree that Maguire is like anyone else and the stick he gets will impact his mental health. Being a footballer doesn’t make you immune to that. But Southgate needs to accept some responsibility at this point and realise he’s hanging the lad out to dry by continuing to pick him at present.

He needs a move. He gets over analysed at Man Utd and his club boss has stripped him of captaincy. He is probably about fifth choice (shaw was preferred to him at CB last season)

West Ham would have been perfect as they sit deep. I guess his wages broke the deal.

It's a legacy thing isn't it, the good English coaches are young (Howe, Potter, etc.) and haven't yet proven themselves in club football which is the usual route to the very top jobs. The big clubs have snatched up the top managers from around the world, because they've been proven elsewhere first. Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino, Postecoglu, all of them cut their teeth elsewhere first.

Then comes the hyper competitive nature of the elite teams in the PL. Man City can't gamble on someone like Potter yet, because while he did a good job at Brighton, that's a very different prospect to Manchester City. When jobs do come the way of young English managers it's usually because that elite club is in flux and more willing to gamble, but that very flux is a barrier to success. Potter inherited an absolute shitshow at Chelsea, with a bloated squad, an inexperienced owner and an expectant fanbase. He was doomed to fail from the off.

Agreed.  Think he would have been a great choice for West Ham.

Should go without saying but still needs to be mentioned: Im pretty sure he knew and is laughing all the way to the bank.

I really don't believe the Chelsea job is the poisoned chalice a lot of people see it as.

I don't think you're giving enough weight to how convincing the owners can be, and how confident/arrogant managers can be.  Potter didn't take that job knowing he'd fail, he took that job because he would have been assured he'd be supported, given time, given control etc. And he would have believed that he could right the ship, get them playing good football, win the fans etc.

The bloke is such a fucking cunt

Aye. The comment in the tweet is spot on too. It’s a friendly question imo, I.e. the journalist is inviting Klopp to have a bit of a rant and he clearly has a strong opinion about it, which he then gives. But not before he’s tried to make the journalist look like a twat for asking it. Then you get all the sycophants piling in with comments about how Klopp really showed him there. Aye, showed him what a cunt he is.
