Dr Gloom 22011
So, he’s finally had a run of games in the first team. On paper, he’s been out most dangerous finisher this season. However…. When everyone is fit, does he start in his favourite position? I think Gordon is our best option at left wing. He fits the way Howe wants to play in terms of pressing intensity. Barnes is a great finisher but has looked best coming off the bench and going at tired defences. Sometimes when he starts games he doesn’t seem to do much when he isn’t scoring. However I do think the decision to sub him on Saturday was weird given the main thing he does offer is a goal threat when we were struggling to break Everton down. Shame neither Gordon or Barnes look as good on the right wing. We have two great options on the left - in an ideal world the same would be said for the right wing as I don’t think Barnes or Gordon want to play there. Both look better on the left but if I had to pick one it would be Gordon. Edited October 7 by Dr Gloom

Barnes is arguably our best finisher especially amongst the midfielders however I don't think his tank is as robust as the others which is why Eddie has probably used him as a sub or taken him off when starting. PaddockLad 17339
When he saw the team on Saturday one of our lot said in the system Eddie plays he’s definitely better as an impact sub. I don’t usually give a lot of credence to this individual’s opinions but it’s difficult to argue after what we saw during the game Edited October 7 by PaddockLad

The problem is, he had an hour in which Gordon quite often occupied two or three defenders creating a shit load of space and did absolutely nothing. It's pointless having him on the pitch if he's not doing the one thing he does well - threatening goal. You may as well have Miggy and Murphy on the pitch doing absolutely fuck all in the final third but stretching their defenders to bits. I completely understood the logic in taking him off as he was playing shite IMO, however at that point I'd probably have hooked Murphy for Osula as well and put Gordon out left. For me, it would have made more sense having a big lump up top who is also insanely quick - Tarkowski and the other slouch would have no doubt threw a few more dodgy tackles in and won us some dangerous free kicks, maybe a red card and perhaps another stonewall pen (that someone else could have actually scored).

Gemmill 45232
Bruno is terrible at the bow and arrow thing. Always looks like he's pulling on a pair of long lady gloves.
Optimistic Nut 160
Barnes will get about 12 goals this season coming in & out of the team. He's deadly.
aimaad22 4160
I know it's been a while now and we've been in the CL and a cup final but I still pinch myself at times when you see Nufc being able to bring Tonali and Barnes off the bench
wykikitoon 20312
Just looking at his stats and since he's joined us he's had 13 goal involvements in 36 games.

He’s a brilliant impact player against tired legs - but will he be happy with that role long term? He’s good enough to start for a lot of top teams but I’m not convinced his off the ball work make him an Eddie Howe player across 90 minutes Edited November 12 by Dr Gloom

So players like Barnes can start the game on the bench, but still be getting 30-45 minutes every weekend. And then there's the cup competitions and potentially Europe too.
Alex 35152
It’s become a bit like rugby union after they allowed multiple subs and certain players are specifically ’finishers’ ie purely in the squad to play the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the match. He seems to be in that category.
Rayvin 5236
Do we reckon Barnes has been better for us than Maddison would have been in the end then? Not really followed Maddison since, did he turn out to be any good?
Gemmill 45232
Maddison has been decent for Spurs, but he's an absolute helmet.
Alex 35152
Still don’t see where he’d have fitted into the system Howe plays. And he doesn’t strike me as being good enough to make the manager change it
aimaad22 4160
He started out well there but he's not been a regular starter for a while now, you get the feeling Ange doesnt trust him. Come in from some stick from Spurs fans too. I dont think he'd have worked well under our system and Eddie Howe at all.

We would have to have switched to 4-2-3-1, with Maddison at 10. But Howe has shown no desire to diverge from 4-3-

Howe’s not as inflexible as is sometimes portrayed I reckon.
PaddockLad 17339
Maddison was subbed at half time the other week with spurs getting beat, they turned it round and won.. He came off the bench at the weekend and they still couldn’t beat Ipswich at home.. Strikes me in the modern game with the way many teams are set up to press the opposition that he’s a luxury player who still doesn’t contribute enough going forward and definitely not enough defensively/in his team’s own half of the pitch. And now over to our good friend and colleague @The Fish who will prove me utterly wrong with some spurious 6th form stats he’s made up earlier
