I’m not sure how a huge ban helps addicts. He’ll probably have loads of time on his hands now with nothing to do.

Look Here Reaction GIF by Paul McCartney

Not sure of the alternative though. Fine for someone earning 150k per week doesn't quite hurt.

I didn’t realise the ban included his work on fitness/tactics at our training ground. I’m not sure how that helps with a gambling addict’s rehabilitation

It doesn't.

Aye I think the bans are disproportionate, especially when you consider the amount of money football is bringing in from betting companies.

Scroll down the page that we've got our statement about Tonali on, and you're presented with this:

I know our partnerships with bookies have got nothing to do with whether players should be betting, but if young lads with lots of money and time on their hands are vulnerable to gambling addictions, maybe their employers and the sport's governing bodies should have a think about how much money they want to take from the gambling industry.

Is it really appropriate to surround the players with betting company promotion and then ban them for a full season of their career (or more) if they use one?

I think if your betting has lead you to cheat / fix a game then a a big ban is right.

If no cheating is involved then a big fine / ratio to your earnings and a month out should suffice.

agreed. who gets to decide thats okay to rob a footballer of a year of his career? it's an arbitrary line drawn in the sand by some random cunt - in what way does it help rehabilitate someone with an addiction?

Im conflicted about this tbh. I'm all for supporting him through his addiction, but giving him a hero's send off for getting himself a years ban seems a bit overkill imo.

Thought Merse spoke a rare bit of sense about the sanction though

I don’t mind the fans’ reaction (although I totally get what you’re saying). I think it can only help in terms of him wanting to come back and repay their faith and support.

Deterrent? Or causes more footballers to hide a gambling addiction for fear of getting a ban?

Addicts hide their addiction from themselves never mind anyone else and unless you've got access to bank account details, gambling is the very easiest to hide.

My thoughts exactly, the clubs will help cover things too where they can since they are also massively punished by losing a player for so long.

It was a great response from the crowd and shows how United the club is, on and off the pitch.

Howe was clever to push him forwards to take the crowd’s applause like that. Yes, he let the club and supporters down. It’s also a catastrophic mistake for his career and he must be devastated. But knowing the crowd are with him will surely motivate him to come back stronger.

Mackem all over this alleged Facebook Post from Tonali. Not questioning why it's a different name, a blurred adult image in the  avatar, and would have been made when he was 11 years old. Almost like they have an agenda.

Beppe Riso:

"You saw the reaction by Newcastle fans. Sandro will pay for his mistakes, but not for things he didn’t do."

"Someone started to condemn Tonali in the media without knowing the reality. I just hope the sanction will be correct."

Saw this on RTG a while back. People jumped straight on it without questioning it, purely because he plays for us.

If it were real then he would have deleted it years ago, and wouldn't have been screenshot back when he was a youth player in Italy. Unless Adam Johnson was trawling through FB looking for material for his alone time 12 years ago and stumbled upon it.

Aye. None of it makes sense. Why is the name wrong? I literally can't see him refernced as that anywhere else. How many 11 year olds has photoshop skills to do this, with 2011 IT? And Bolotelli was playing for Man city for over a year by that time, so where's the motive even? And even if it was him, he would have been a minor.

Thing is, they're attempting to use this as evidence Newcastle is a racist city. The brass neck of these insular,  backward, Brexiter, Tommy Robinson wannabe cunts is staggering.

I thought maybe adding ino to the end of a name may have been the Italian equivalent of adding Ito at the end of Spanish names. I think in Spanish it means little <insert name> to infer they are say Sandro junior. But that doesn't even seem the case, it's just a different name.

Balotelli would have been a hero to most young, Italian aspiring footy players at the time I would have guessed. Tonali was on the books of a team at that point too and despite Italy's rubbish handling of football racism I really doubt he'd have gotten away with something as abhorrent as that post.
