We could really do with someone with a decent left foot to change our set piece delivery, as well.  Luke Shaw's free kick was just demanding someone to put it in.  Of course, our lot would have scuffed the header, but with Trippier taking all kicks, it must be simpler to defend.

I’m fucking gutted this morning like, not going to lie. The game definitely felt like a marking point for some players going into the summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a largely different side this time next year. Saw someone describe it as the last day of Year 11 and that’s about right. Would have been nice for this group to win something before they get washed away by better players but it just wasn’t to be. It probably came a season too early

Probably the worst time in the season too in terms of the relative form of the sides

I don't get all this idea of us being at the start and there's more to come so it doesn't matter, if we have that mentality then we will continue to lose finals.  We could have said that 20 years ago and look where it got us. Man Utd were dogshit at the start of the season, they've got 2 players who make them tick at present and both scored today. They did little for much of the game as their plan was to sit in and stop us playing in the final third with the early lead. Rashford is running purple at the minute and unfortunately all our hot streaks have dried up. Whether that's fatigue, nerves, over thinking stuff I don't know but we need to find what got us free scoring and feeling invincible again. We were there on merit and we shouldn't just have this plucky loser mentality.

But that's the point, once we sign more players like Bruno and have fewer players like Murphy* at the club, our mentality will shift. Look at Man Utd, they have spent hundreds of millions over the years and have winners throughout the side, yet they still went off to sign Casemiro who knows exactly what is needed to win trophies. Who in the current squad can say the same? But as we add players with the quality and winning mentality, we will see better ends to days like this.

*Not that he did anything particularly egregious.

Our first team, by and large, is at the level you want your squad players to be at, will take a few windows to change that.

Hugely over achieved this season, hopefully we keep it going, but we ain't going down (which at start of season was the thing I wanted to be achieved asap) so I will just enjoy the ride here on in.

P.S. I rate Murphy, not as a starter but as a squad player for now.

Looked as though Ritchie was given a swansong and Anderson a look at the big time, with those final substitutions.

Also highlights the difference between the two sides - our lack of squad depth.

Can’t help wonder what might have been if they’d gambled in the transfer market in January.

I think we were probably 3 players short yesterday, all of whom would cost 40-50m.  Not sure gambling in January would have solved that issue.

It all comes back to who was available they should have bought though. I honestly think they way they play it is to wait for the right player rather than buy another for the sake of it (like Maddison, hopefully). That’s the way it should be as well

I think this gamble in January thing is a false premise, they'll know the players they want and if they aren't available, they won't take second best if they think they can get their first choice next window (or two).

The aim isn't/wasn't to win the 2023 League Cup, it's to become a behemoth, that is the plan and they won't gamble (which has the risk of it not paying off) to get there.

Btw I also have a feeling we won't sign Maddison.

Aye we said this to some of their lot after the game, they agreed that if it had been played in November we’d have twatted them. We were in a pub across from Great Portland Street tube station, it was rammed with Mags post game. Every time two or three mancs wandered in with their shiny new scarves on they were greeted with a chorus of

GEORDIE BOYS ARE ON A BENDER/ MASON GREENWOOD IS A SEX OFFENDER

which most took in good humour tbf ☺️

Am not complaining or particularly pissed off with yesterday but to say Man Utd were shite isn’t a reflection of what I watched. After the goals they pretty much knew how to shut the game down and we at this stage of our development didn’t really know how to change that. We’re a few transfer windows away from that level . First we need to start taking some the chances we do create . Where Wilson was when the ball was squared clean across the six yard box in the first half I think only he knows. That’s the game changing chance, and he was AWOL. God knows what’s wrong with that lad but I think there’s more to it than loss of form.  Maxi was getting double teamed which he can’t deal with (not many can tbf) Bruno faded then appeared to get injured going for a ball that maybe wasn’t there to be won. Their first goal wasn’t a free kick in the first place as long long as I’ve got a hole in my arse. Isak started well but as usual when I’ve seen him play gets frustrated with those around him and goes into the huff a bit.

I asked a Manc if they’re confused about the Glazers, singing how they want them out just before full time holding aloft the scarves that had been handed out by the Glazers. I mentioned the titles and champions leagues they’d won under their ownership, he mumbled something about not being able to remember much after 1999 which was exceedingly convenient for the purposes of the conversation. That’s the biggest takeaway from yesterday, the sheer entitled arrogance of these fuckers. That was the hardest thing to take, not what happened on the pitch…

Agree with this. Wilson is a shadow of the player from before the world cup

Pretty much agree but I thought it was a definite foul for their free kick / first goal.

It was right in front of us, for me it was a bit soft. In keeping with the general standard of reffing yesterday though. Was Dalot’s yellow after 8 minutes really a yellow? Couldn’t see that as well but that looked soft too…

This ☝️

Also wtf was that header first half, he glanced it but he was in front of the fucking goal and no-one near him.

Also, I know Lascelles is limited but at least the fucker can nut the ball on target at corners, we are absolutely woeful at that.

Couldn't agree more about that last paragraph. A mate of mine is a red and he is one of the worst for entitled arrogance. Ever since they started picking up results with ETH, I've had to endure his "Utd are still the greatest club in the world" shite. I'm still praying they are going through a purple patch before reverting to previous form.

Anyway back on about us, I've calmed down since last night and can see that these players gave it everything out there and that's all we can ask. We didn't have the quality to break them down much like the game at Liverpool where we dominated but didn't have the killer instinct.

Wilson's lack of form is punishing us now, hopefully Isak can get some games in his place but I'm not sure whether Eddie seems him as a striker or not. Isak with 2 of Gordon/Maxi/Willock/Almiron playing off him keeps the intensity up and maybe they can find their scoring boots again.

Targett coming back might give BDB a rest and a chance to rotate a couple in defence.

15 games to enjoy now. Let's hope it's a Euro spot at the end of it.

No. I don’t think it was a yellow. For the free kick it was an attempted shoulder charge but it was into Rashford’s back. He went down easy but was entitled to do so. It was a daft challenge to make
