So, given all that, why not use a term or phrase that better explains what they do? Genuinely, why?

Bad analogy time. People watch films for different reasons. Some people like to discuss character arcs, hidden meanings and allegories, effect of the soundtrack and photography. Some people just like action. Neither is wrong

No, neither is wrong, but for those who watch just for the action to tell the people who look for arcs, meanings and whatever that they're doing it wrong is galling.

Look, it's fine if someone calls it defensive, I don't think it's particular specific but whatever, I do mind if someone says I'm wrong for calling it a Low Block.

Well the concept of total football is based around players moving around and positions being interchangeable, rather than rigid. But equally the football played by Ajax, The Netherlands and Feyenoord back then was based around a high press and winning the ball high up the pitch. But even as a relatively recent concept it’s been used since the early 90s. Almost certainly due to the change in the back pass law

Don't disagree, but in this country its only been mainstream for a relatively short period of time.

Its not something you'd associate with Ferguson, and his teams dominated the game here for 15-20 years.

Klopp and Pep sides do it and others, like Leeds under Bielsa, and now us under Eddie.

I think you are right about the back pass law and I'd add the improvement in modern pitches also makes it more viable as the vast majority of teams dont play route one football any more.

To be fair, I just used the term, it was Tom and then others who threw a geriatric fit because it wasn't the same term used 40yrs ago or whatever.

Pretty condescending there Rayvin. I'm not less informed because I don't cling to the remnants of outdated language. I use some of the language the experts use, because they're using straightforward terms to describe larger concepts.

Expand

For christ sake, man  I have the utmost respect for your knowledge of the game, it far exceeds my own I am quite sure. I thought that would go without saying.

I wasn't calling you less informed. I can see how you've read it that way but that's simply because I didn't make sufficient clarifications on my post. There are of course other groups of people who will enjoy talking about football at a technical level using these terms - you use these terms because you find them easier in the communication of abstract concepts to others - that's fine - but I imagine you'd understand these concepts without those terms too. Therefore, the language makes it easier to communicate the ideas outside of specialised groups more so than within them (it may well help within them, but only if everyone agrees on a shared meaning, and if it doesn't lead to 3 pages of back and forth  ).

It wasn't a holistic case spanning all demographics, it was simply a single point that was actually supposed to be supportive of your position.

Makes you yearn for a clearly defined term for a larger concept... doesn't it?

On the contrary, I would have hoped someone with your social expertise would have appreciated the concept I was putting forward at an abstract level ;)

Ferguson’s Man Utd had a few different incarnations but they definitely had sides that were good at winning the ball high up the pitch. Agree with what you say on the whole though. I think modern pitches (with UV lighting so they’re good all the time) and fitness levels are a massive factor. It’ll go out of vogue, for more possession based football (or whatever), then no doubt come back again.

Oh it’s all about calling things by a new name is it Dave?

Your trouble is mate is that you’re looking down your nose at people. It doesn’t make you a bad person, but you’re going to get a bit of blow back. But that’s the main reason some of us are here, so it’s all fine :good:

No, I'm not. If someone had said "We've got to get through two banks of four" I wouldn't have blinked and the last 4 pages of this thread would have been Jacob Murphy memes. I say Low Block and everyone loses their minds. I said "Low block", then people were incredulous and derisory about it. I defended it and myself. Nobody's been able to explain why else people would push back on simple shit like 'low block' or whatever.

Thing is “cavalcade of crusty cunts” somewhat gives the lie to that notion

I feel that you think that because we’re old therefore our thinking on the game is out of date. It’s not. We’ve shown you but you ignore it. I have no objection to whatever  you want to call things but I do get the impression that you don’t like it when someone goes “eh?”  when you’re on a word flourish 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cavalcade of crusty cunts came after how many pages of shit?

No, I don't care that you're old. I care when the explanation after the "eh?" is met with derision and abuse.

I get a lot of shit on here and honestly, that's fine and I enjoy the attention, but you can't clutch your pearls when I give some shit back.

Yeah ok that’s fine, my point was you can’t say it’s just a new better name for things then insinuate that we’re all thick, that’s giving the game away a bit :D

Its this underlying insinuation that gets me, and tbf in the past you’ve insinuated nothing, you’ve told me am plain thick. Fine, as you can tell whether am right or wrong am perfectly capable of defending myself and I know it’s largely in jest but it has to be said this came up because someone on here didn’t know what you meant by “low block”…. you’ve explained why perfectly well, but someone still had to ask..
