Eddie’s title chasers against some league one outfit from Yorkshire

Apart from Anderson the starting XI only consisted of players with a decent pedigree. Some may not really be Premier League players but still dhould be regular starters for good Championship sites. We weren’t playing a bunch of unproven youngsters. I don’t think you can blame Howe expecting them to perform much better. The team he selected was good enough on paper but didn’t rise to the occasion while Sheffield showed the kind of cup performance you can expect from a team trying to upset a superior team. They were up for the fight while some of our players simply thought it would be a walk in the park.

Trouble is we've seen time and again wholesale changes can put you in bother. Like I said, it's hard to blame Howe too much if at all but there's one or two who haven't done their prospects of staying at the club in the long run any favours at all.

Anderson seem to start in the Joelinton role on the left and he didn't look comfortable. He then moved more central and looked better.  I think the only reason Howe hasn't sent him out on loan is because we really don't have strength in depth to allow it.

The bottom line on Howe. If the numerous chances we had, were scored, we would have won comfortably.

The team he put out was “good” enough to win.

I agree with CT (may the lord have mercy on my soul)

Aye, it’s a fair point. We had more than enough chances to win the game. It’s always a gamble starting with that many changes particularly when you look at some of the shite on our bench - Wilson doesn’t miss Wood’s chance and our normal defence probably doesn’t concede those two goals - but I guess Eddie sees the league cup final and the league as the bigger priorities. An FA cup run would add to fixture congestion too. More of a rest gives us a better chance of securing top 4 top while our rivals are playing in Europe and the FA cup.

Absolutley

When I saw the side I was happy and maybe underestimated Sheff Weds.

The side put out were good enough to win. They played like all they would have to do is turn up. I didn't know enough about Sheffield Wednesday to comment on their side, but they played well and were definitely more hungry for it.

I turned to my mate after 5 mins yesterday and said I had a feeling it wasn't going to be our day and it annoyingly proved to be right.

Howe did try to rescue it by bringing the big guns on, but I think this was more born out of the fact we were losing to a League One side for the second year running. He made some comments a couple of months ago about not ever wanting to make those mistakes again.

In hindsight, we don't currently have the resources to battle on 3 fronts so it was probably a blessing. If we beat Leicester on Tuesday it'll soon be forgotten.

The saddening thing of all for me is how cheapened the FA Cup has become. As a kid it was the pinnacle of the football season but too many teams treat it like a necessary evil.

That final sentence Craig was discussed between me and a pal at Christmas.  It's sad.  Maybe take the Prem team out the of Carabou to try and revive it?

Personally I'd award the FA Cup winners a Champions League spot and give 4th in the PL a Europa League spot. Teams would then respect it more.

In terms of the manner of the defeat. Im not downbeat at all.  If you think the amount of times we've gone down without a whimper in  a piss-poor performance over the past 15 years then losing is more palatable when the team gives everything but is unlucky.

On another day we win the 6-3.

Is this the week CT has finally got the hang of this football lark?

Yeah I agree with that. We didn't play badly, it's just our finishing was pretty woeful.

I massively questioned Isak being started, and still do. Should have brought him off the bench when the opposition were tired. I also agree with Alex's (I think!) that we should have started strong and then brought the big names off when the tie was won.

I like this idea. Never going to happen though is it.

Agree, someone posted on Twitter with images of the 4-5 chances where we had a completely free shot at goal all within the 5-18 yard range. It’s kind of similar to the Leeds game in that we did enough to win but just didn’t put away the chances we got, the difference being Wednesday put their chances away whereas Leeds didn’t really create anything of note (obviously that was against our first choice back line).

First choice back 5 are playing and the first goal doesn't happen. 2nd one was just brilliantly taken, but there was a fuck up from Joelinton which allowed the opportunity.

Fuck up was Bruno, wasn’t it ? he headed it back into trouble.

The back line was the least of our troubles last night IMO.

Aye, I think the second wouldn’t have happened anyway with our first choice back line - Schar isn’t exactly a speedster but fucking hell Lascelles is absurdly slow.

Burn probably stops the ball coming in for their first. And you’d expect schar to do better at tracking his man than lascelles managed for the Windass finish
