Whats he on currently with us?  Most of the big clubs globally would double his wages easily

a quick google suggests bruno is our top earner on £160k per week though fuck knows how accurate those figures are. if we want isak to sign a new deal, you'd imagine it would take something north of £200k per week to persuade him

£150k for Kelly  Casey make that?

So Isak should IMO be inline at least with Bruno.  He can easily earn double elsewhere and those clubs paying that are ones that are going for trophies on a more consistent basis than us.  Thats the harsh reality.

fuck knows where they found the data, or if it's accurate, but it's the same across a bunch of different sites

They only have a short career so will look to maximise income. It's not only the weekly wage but they'd get a fat signing on fee when moving as well.

They are only an injury away from being their last contract.

This is one of the biggest fallacies in football. A modest wage for a premier league player at £20k per week would earn £10 million in their 10 prime years between 20 and 30.

We all know that there are so many more financial benefits and a player like Isak or Bruno will make a hell of a lot more in their ‘short career’

How much did you make in your youth? I assume it was a lot less than 10 million quid like.

Look at the likes of Shearer, Lineker, Jenas (oh dear), Carrrrrrrager etc etc for one career path after the playing days, or all the bloody managers who have banked millions since they took off their boots.

Hang on, how many footballers play for a decade in the Premier League? It's way more likely that for the vast majority their top flight career will be shorter even than 10 years.

Then you have to factor in the cost of living for a PL footballer. If they rent a property in the popular "Golden Triangle" area of the North West, they could be paying up to £8k a week for a house. Plus renting a flash car and all the other things too.

But we are talking about premiership level players here yeah?

And no-one has to buy a flash car etc, fucking hell man can people not take responsibility in and for their own lives?

No doubt all these lads at a high level in the game are given professional advice.

I dunno like I just think this “short career” thing is a cliché. Sorry to offend.

Peace

Players have a short amount of time to make a lot of money. They are also one bad injury away from not playing again or having to drop lots of levels (and income). I listen to a lot of ex-footballer podcasts and a lot of them spend the money as it comes in, like we do. It's the same, just at a different level.

I think the players get advice more now than they did 20-25 years ago but it doesn't mean they'll take it. A lot of them are flash kids that love the limelight.  There are always exceptions though. I think Fowler bought half the property in Liverpool with his money.

It's not like.

What's your average person's career? 30 years? 50 years?

And what happens to the average career if you blow out your knee, or whatever?

And no, you don't have to buy a flash car, but can you let me know how many Premier League footballers drive about in a Kia Ceed, or a Honda Jazz?

And you have offended me Dougle, you've offended me to my very core. I will not rest until my honour is satisfied.

Average career of a Premier League footballer is 8 years apparently. According to the Internet.

I assume that's the average time a footballer that makes it to the PL lasts in the PL, rather than their full career length.

Not a lot of time, which is all the more reason for them to want to make as much as possible while they're there.

Aside from this point about the players needing to move on for their own career... is it not also true that, whisper it, we might need them to move on in order to develop within PSR? Developing players, something Howe is very good at, and selling them on in order to restart the cycle, is probably the only way we can realistically move ourselves to the level we need to be at. Which depressingly feels like the Ashley model all over again, but at least with this lot the aim is to improve rather than stand still. I mean I think that's the reality for all clubs bar those at the absolute pinnacle of the game, frankly.

you're right, but i'd counter that by saying the saudis stated aim is to be number one. they will want to save face and are unlikely to sanction the sale of our prize assets if they can find another way. feels like they have been keeping their powder dry and playing by the rules for a while now. whether they continue to play nice with this long-game strategy or start to flex their muscles remains to be seen. this approach so far is quite unlike how they have disrupted other sports or how they throw their weight around with their other business interests.

The issue though is how much they really care about us at the heart of all this? They have the world cup, they've got high profile players going to Saudi.. I feel like any genuine desire to push us forward into the grey areas would have to come from internal leadership at the club and be signed off by the Saudis, rather than pushed by them. I think they're good owners from a purely football POV, but I'm not sure how big a deal we really are for them in the end.

i dunno. we are a tiny part of the PIF portfolio but i don't buy the argument i've read online that they're losing interest because of the financial regulations. the club also just announced the appointment of a senior PIF bloke to the board of directors. i don't know how much you can read into that. a new super stadum would be more of a statement of intent. we can probably be reassured if they announce a new state-of-the-art ground on leazes park

I'm not saying they're losing interest tbh, just that we're not exactly their only iron in the fire. Their strategic objectives for the club will be more or less what they always were, but the fact that they've kept Howe around rather than going for a heavy hitter with more reputation is a pretty clear signal to me that they are tolerant of this being a gradual build project.

For my two cents the club -appears- to be a little directionless now considering boardroom departures and Eales' situation. I'm sure it's not, and I'm sure we get clarity and executive direction back soon... but still, we're not giving out the vibe of a club that is determined to push forward at all costs. Instead I think Howe is carrying the executive team atm to some extent.

well yeah, you're spot on with that. and i can see why people think we're not their biggest priority because it's patently the case. buying newcastle is a small piece of their project 2030 schtick though. they'll want us to be champions, playing regularly in the champions league and winning trophies by that time, i believe.

Aye it does feel a little like that. The chaos in the summer showed we're not as well run as we thought and a lot of the decision making does seem to be very slow.

Isak is probably on their radar.

I don't think Barca in their current financial situation will be buying 100M players anytime soon.
