Would be a great story for future signing targets as well that you can come here and be converted to a full Brazil International.

If we stay ahead of Man United in the league - which I think we will - you'd think the Brazil coach will have to give him a go.

Aye. I saw it live, I thought it was a red, but if the ref watched it for VAR and overturned it then it wasn't a red card.

Perfect answer. No further questions required.

It's not a red card simply because of the height of the challenge (which some have suggested). The main distinction is he was across De Bruyne and not into him (i.e. de bruyne was tripped and not kicked) it was studs first and it wasn't out of control. It he came into the side of De Bruyne then it's dangerous and ared. He was actually on a trajectory to get the ball which is clear from the high angle. It's a cynical yellow every day of the week because he knew even if he gets to the ball first that he has cut across De Bruyne's run. I can actually understand in this case why the ref gave it a red to begin with as he was seeing it from behind De Bruyne so just would have seen Trippier come across through the air and De Bruyne going down.

It was perfect execution of the VAR system by both the VAR and the ref.

Ref still otherwise had an absolute shocker though.

Bruno being here surely puts a bunch more Brazilian eyes on our games too, and having watched them you can't help but be impressed by Joelinton's energy and his link up play. The one thing he probably needs to work on is resisting that extra push when boxing a defender into a corner, that little bit of over enthusiasm too often results in a free kick to the defender who will happily go down softly when Joe comes in like a bull in a china shop.

I'm not a well man today

I actually went to the match for a change, can't remember ever seeing the ground like that. The atmosphere was absolutely insane.

and as for the performance...it was really something and that is my level of analysis.

That free kick 🤯

read a few comments and decided its best not to read any more as i know the mixture you get just after a match.

read some on city fans being a nasty lot in years gone by. so a quick comment on that. i had a season ticket as a boy in the 70s and i do remember all the "city aggro" type chants and seeing some stuff and i do remember feeling unsafe walking to the ground.

that was then, this is now. i don't remember seeing any violence or feeling unsafe at all in a good 20 years. i moved away to london and couldn't afford football for a long time. i started going again in the late 90s. with all the entertainment that city lay on around the ground it also has a good family atmosphere these days. obviously i'm a home fan there though. also i don't have an ounce of violence in me so maybe i see things differently. i think football is now much more sanitized everywhere.

so as a guest on your forum my blue biased view on the game

really enjoyed the game. you took the game to us instead of sitting back as so many do.

for spells you attacked us with quick counters which is how palace did the double over us last year. we struggled with Zaha's pace - ring any bells?

our possession play was lacking its usual cutting edge which i think might be in part due to us trying to adapt from a false 9 to a genuine 9.

there was a spell at 3-1 where it could have gone on to be 6-1 we just couldn't figure out a plan until we did.

We do tend to hang in there when the going gets tough just look at the last day of last season.

I thought trippier should have gone other than that i think the ref did okay in what was a fast paced and exciting game

If you guys play like that week in week out, you just might make kevin keegan happy on 2points - style and finishing above our neighbours

oh and haaland is now 3 in 3 - adapting

finally heard what grealish said about almiron, bit of a dick thing to say.  but i do like it when players have personality and say things they shouldn't.

sorry but that's my blue spectacled view and i'd rather say it as i felt it than lie to appease you.

arsenal at the top are looking all the more impressive this morning.

I haven't been to your new ground but Maine Rd was still iffy on the last few occasions in the late 90s/early 00s - especially around that big car park.

I don't mind different views but I think you're completely wrong on the ref - he heavily favoured your lot all game and not giving a pen for the foul on Schar was a disgrace.

@LondonBlue thanks for the honest post.

If I was a Man City fan I'd probably have thought the ref "did ok" too. One thing he eventually got right you dont agree with

Grealish is a dick but if what he said has in any way motivated Almiron (who had a strong pre-season and has started the season well) then I'm glad he said it.

Haaland is going to cause a lot of teams nightmares; with your teams incisive passing and his head down sprint any similarly sized defender won't be able to keep up and any similarly fast player will be out-sized. Pope's quickness off his line in this instance is going to have to be the template for teams to follow.

When I first watched the game I marvelled at the brilliance of De Bruyne's pass for the third Man City goal how he somehow threaded the needle through a wafer thin passage. Having re-watched the replays he just got incredibly lucky as it was more or less passed into Willock's feet. It was great movement from Silva though.

Agreed. Gave all the decisions to the “big” club. I look forward to similarly biased officiating on a couple of years when we’re up there

In their previous two PL games, Man City conceded 0.37xG, we had 2.21 xG.

In our last 6 games against them we averaged 25% possession, created 0.72xG, had 2/7 shots on target and scored 0.83. We conceded 2.53xG, gave up 8/19 shots on target and conceded 4 goals.

Yesterday we had 31% possession, created 2.21xG, 6/12 shots on target and scored 3. We conceded 3.67xG, gave up 10/21 shots on target and conceded 3 goals.

Away from the stats I think with a better RW (Almiron had a great game) and with a proper left back instead of out of position Burn, I think we win that game. We pressed intelligently, rarely letting them build from the back unaccosted,  the midfield wasn't panicked on the ball and we were a constant threat on the break.

it might well be a case of the new ground being safer and the new owners improving on that. i will concede that when i would return home to stockport train station in the 90s and get a bus towards manchester, i felt unsafe on the bus, having said that. i now live in croydon and i have felt unsafe in london too.

i'm not going to lie, but i genuinely don't recall the Schar penalty call and haven't seen it in any reviews. but then i'm less likely to pay attention to it. so i can't defend it.

i did think the first 2 yellows were correct as there was no attempt to play the ball only the man. there was then no yellow for one of our players but i remember thinking the difference was that if you take away the fouled player in the 3 calls the city player would have made contact with the ball, whereas the 2 newcastle ones  movement was in a different direction. not long after that it felt like i was watching an old episode of doctor who and had the sofa not been up against a wall thats where i would have watched it from.

var calls went your way so that could suggest that the prior onfield calls went our way. it didn't seem that way to me. it seemed like he let a lot of stuff go for both sides.

xG schmexg.

I’m surprised by those possession stats though. City are always likely to have more of the ball because of they way they play but it felt like we had loads more of it than 31% yesterday, again proving its not how much of the ball you have but what you do with it when you are in possession that counts

Aye, it's a penalty. Stones clatters Schar, isn't even looking for the ball. He does look at the ref in the immediate aftermath though, because he's feeling very very guilty.

we normally encourage teams to press as we know how to break the press. i think its very early in the season and our game is still a bit raw so that might have worked yesterday. normally we lap that up though.

the real danger teams to us are the fast counter teams. and i suspect that the 2 fullbacks pushed into the middle can make us vulnerable in the corners if a team can get there.

west ham caused us nightmares last year but those 2 pushed into the middle completely nullified their threat. horses for course though.

a fast counter team could easily have poor stats but more goals against us

not fact, my opinion.

i might, but i'm "working from home" so it'll have to wait until tonight.

tbh i often skip motd when we don't play well.

but i balance that out by rewatching city 2 villa 3

ah is that the one where its all body contact? i do remember that (didn't realise your players name, sorry), i remember thinking we got away with one but don't remember thinking stonewall penalty. But you should see the number of stonewall penalties we don't get.

we would have screamed "home ref" had that happened but in truth couldn't have been too aggrieved either.

I couldnt help but think about this after the game & how right he was.

“Don’t ever give up on your club. Keep supporting it, it’s your club and trust me, one day you will get your club back and it will be everything you wanted it to be"

"Newcastle United is bigger than anyone. It hurts I know, but just keep going. He is only one man we are a city, a whole population. Trust me.”  Kevin Keegan

I think that Man City can handle most teams pressing because it's not always married with the kind of bravery on the ball that we showed. So often you face a team who're pressing from the front, ahead of an entrenched back line. So they press, force you to play the ball long or more quickly which leads to a turnover, but once they have the ball they lump it or knock it around at the back, they don't commit men forward, or try to play around you. Guimaraes, Joelinton exemplified that bravery on the ball, taking touches under pressure etc.

I don't think you played poorly and, yes, when Haaland is more accustomed to his teammates, the PL and Guardiola's style, you'll be even more dangerous. However, I think the way we set out, played to our strengths AND exploited the chinks in your almost impenetrable armour.
