Blur's first album, Leisure was regarded as shoegaze, they were even the first support for The Jesus and Mary Chain's Rollercoaster show I saw at the Brixton academy in 1991 or 92. Shoegazing Blur, followed by My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr and JMC what a gig. Wasn't the crap called Reef also lumped in with britpop? And Ride's move from shoegaze to britpop, fuck me what a horror. Shoegaze, then trip hop - the shite inbetween doesn't exist in my world. Talking of Supergrass @PaddockLad did you know Micky Quinn is now bass player for Swervedriver? 9 hours ago, Monkeys Fist said: By the way @Meenzer, those Finnish chaps Sammy recommended to me in the music thread ( Gentlemen Losers), are gloriously melancholic in an a way only Scandinavians can be. I can totally picture them sitting in the sauna, whipping themselves with birch twigs, just after finishing another album. “ Well Stig, thåts another album done” ” Joo” ” Would you like some pickled fish” ”Joo” ” Shall we watch Pingu?” ” Nøot Nøot!” So you're a fan @Monkeys Fist? Walsh, Lou Pearlman, all the way back to Tam Paton with the Bay City Rollers. It's pretty grim. Finally a band TP has heard of.

Alex 36542
3 hours ago, Renton said: No, exactly. I was and still am a massive fan of the so called founders of Brit Pop, Suede, and they have fuck all to do with this movement in reality. Why weren't bands like Radiohead and the Manics classed as Brit Pop? It's not a musical movement, there is no coherence here. But for me the time did have a zeitgeist feel to it which I miss. Whether it was genuinely better or just because I was young I don't know. Also coincided with the best NUFC team ever. If I had to distil the whole feeling into a single song it would be Arab Strap's "First Big Weekend of Summer" which is identifiably set 14th to 16th June 1996. Never liked Blur or Oasis. Loved Pulp, though I I'd be amazed if there are not some dodgy skeletons in Cocker's wardrobe that will one day fall out. Talking of zeitgeist's though, Albarn perfectly captured the feeling of Brexit in the Good, the Bad, and the Queen in "Merrieland". A feeling of insularity, decay, nostalgia, undertones of racism. He's one artist that has become more relevant with increasing age. It was fucking brilliant musically and from social pov for me. I just thought a lot of stuff championed by the NME etc was very bland. Which was more my point. Even back then I felt that way. It was like there was a completely separate parallel world which they chose to ignore. Just their own little bubble. Odd when you consider what was happening in hip hop, electronic music and so on but even to the exclusion of better guitar bands a lot of the time

Music journalists are paid to invent genres to build hype. That was particularly the case back in the 90s when music hacks were more relevant than they are today. The thing that fucked me off about NME and Melody Maker was they built bands up then shot them down. But that’s the British way. We don’t like to see people enjoying success too much. Bans for league offences (yellow card tot ups) don't transfer into the cup competition, but reds do, and his was a red, plus an FA charge, so could be, that'd be so fucking funny. If banned from the touchline are they not also forbidden to contact the team/touchline during the game.

Have to pass messages through an intermediary during play. Of course he could get a stadium ban like Pardew. 🙂
