Probably correct. But Miggy, Kelly and Targett wouldn't have fired us to CL.

If we were playing those three with any regularity between now and the end of the season, the CL is gone anyway.

where we were in 2020? Well yeah. But as we’re getting on for five years into the takeover I’d say it’s par. Not a disaster but another nearly season would be disappointing given how promising it was looking.

Reminds me of the chances missed under Ashley to kick on from a position of strength. The difference being we then had an owner who didn’t care. Now we have ambitious owners who seemingly can’t find a way to invest due to a mix of financial regulation and failure to boost the commercial revenue to allow us to spend.

Last three seasons have been excellent and beyond initial expectation IMO, Rather than inability to spend I thinks it's about being careful with the money, we can't take a £50 million punt and it not to pay off (Barnes does fit that category maybe).

every transfer is a punt tbh.

as is not making any transfers for three consecutive windows. As Howe said himself, there’s a risk the squad goes stale

Rashford will be fantastic for the rest of the season. Villa will pay £85m for him and he’ll instantly turn to shit.

Remember where you heard it first.

We heard it a few years ago when he got a new contract at Man Utd and did exactly that.

Isak will be away in the summer if we fail to get champions league, no question.

Maybe, maybe not, he seems a pretty chilled character, but even if so we'll get serious coin* for him.

*Which Mitchell will take away in a rowing boat and bury in a chest on the island in Leazes Park lake and hire some cannibals to guard it.

Even more of a punt if you deviate from your main vetted/analysed targets though. The squad is stale now, getting rid of the more stagnant bits is a good step towards changing that.

He’s been massively hyped up in the media, and rightly so. The champions league is his stage. It’ll be disappointing to miss out on top five this season because I think it will confirm his exit. He’ll be 26 this year - he’ll want to play at the top level during his peak years and if we can’t offer that he’ll rightly look elsewhere. I’d be surprised if his head hasn’t already been turned but if we finish top 5, why would he leave?

The good news if we miss out CL is we’d be well placed to demand an astronomical fee - probably a PL record - but it would be a shame.

who is saying we should deviate from targets? It’s Mitchell’s job to identify them and recruit them. That’s how he’ll be judged

He will, but they've got to be available.

£50 to SBR foundation says he isn’t

Only NUFC could go through 14 years of mike fucking Ashley not to mention the late Hall/Shepherd period where the taps were turned off, get a mega rich ownership group who probably aren't shy about investing short term to get us up to scratch before the sponsorship money plus sales keeps us on even keel not needing heavy investment BUT this PSR comes in to stop us. We can't have nice, shiny silver things can we? The squad is desperate for a refresh if we are serious about competing for cups and CL football but our hands are tied. The sales make perfect sense but the price is second half lethargic performances in the short term. It's shit but here we are. Step back and I'd far rather be in this position than the walking dead club we were under fatty as we have professional people brought in to problem solve this and a willingness from them for the club to kick on. It's frustrating though, nae twa doots aboot it as someone once said.

nah - you're alright. who do you think i am - deano?

i would love it if you're proved to be right btw. i just don't see him hanging around to miss another year of champions league when he's clearly one of the hottest strikers in world football. it's a short career. i'd be amazed if he stays in that scenario - and absolutely chuffed if he gave us two seasons when he's hitting his peak without CL. i just don't see it happening and wouldn't blame him if he did end up going.

i'm curious, @strawb - if we drop off and finish 7th or 8th, and isak finishes on 25+ goals again (which looks a certainty), what makes you think he'd stay? do you just think there aren't enough clubs who could afford him?

Fair enough.

Theres a dearth of teams who could afford him imo.

Italy - Maybe Napoli

France - PSG, currently playing without a proper striker

Germany - Bayern, Harry Kane

Spain - Real, Mbappe. Barca, broke

England - City, Haaland. Liverpool, too many forwards as is but maybe if Salah left. Chelsea, sideways step. Man Utd, won’t be in the champions league. Spurs, ditto.

In my view that leaves arsenal, the fact they bid for Watkins instead of even trying for him this month suggests to me they don’t think they could afford him either.

i could see him going to liverpool or real madrid - maybe even chelsea if they finish top four given how they seem to have an limitless pool of cash to throw around.

i read something the other day suggesting real might sell vini jnr and move mbappe back to the left and buy a proper CF. i wouldn't blame him if he fancied moving there in the slightest.

arsenal is the club being linked the most, i have no idea what state their finances are in, but they've dropped £100m on a player before. and if isak starts to agitate for a move, it's hard to hang on to him. i'd be annoyed if he went to arsenal because their manager and fans are among the worst.

Liverpool would be my worry. Saudi's are interested in Nunez, Salah is potentially off too. They would see Isak as the perfect replacement.

They've also managed to earn £80m just from winning the CL league stage already this season, so PSR won't be a problem for them.
