It doesn't make any sense if none of our targets are available to buy this window, because it weakens the squad.

true, but it weakens an area of the squad where we're strong. we've still got burn, botman, schar and murphy at CB - soon to be joined again by lascelles and krafth

we have to be smarter at letting players go when the right bid comes along because of psr. we've been terrible sellers under the new owners, the one negative since they took over tbh. that's partially because offloading deadwood isn't easy but in hindsight we probably should have shifted trippier and wilson last january when generous offers came in for both players.

How does that PSR spending thing work again, if we sold him for £11m what would that 'become' in terms of immediately accessible funds? A £55m player on a 5 year deal?

If we could replace him now and bring in that £55m player, I'd say go for it. Otherwise I think Gemmill is right.

Aye and we might not get an offer close to that for him in the summer. If we don't get another CB in this window then it gives Eddie extra to get his top target in the summer. Cheer up a bit you pessimistic fucker.

What is it that you've recently spotted in Eddie Howe that makes you think he'd be happy to sell a CB in the middle of the season and just be super chill that he can replace him in the summer?

It's not smart to sell a player if you can't replace him during the season.

Krafth, Lascelles, Botman. All are coming back from proper injuries. We're not over stocked at CB given that context.

Like I say, they'll have a plan, and if this is doable this window, they'll do it. But people demand we take the money "cos it's £11m" is stupid.

i'm much more concerned about an injury to isak or murphy than i am to one of our centre backs.

i'm sure they do have a plan. let's see what happens.

Two conditions need to be met for him to be sold this window, for me:

- Howe is happy to sell him

- The funds can be reinvested this window

The raw fact that we can get £11m for him is just the gate to those two conditions. If either of them fails......HE STAYS!

Except no one gives a fuck about your conditions.

This is the sort of trading that our lord and saviour, Paul Mitchell, is talking about yet people who understand fuck all about finance just cry 'no!'.

Aye after the summer window Mitchell just had, he'll be desperate to sell a player and not replace him the very next window.

I look forward to his "but it was £11m" press conference.

Yeah no way we're doing this unless Mitchell already has a replacement CB identified that we can immediately bring in. Not after the Guehi fiasco and not when 2 of your backup CBs are constantly injured and one starter has just come back from a year out.

We've all been crying out for a forward for a while, I'm sure the club is aware of the need too  But that money has got to come from selling Longstaff/Miggy etc.

If rumours are to be believed, and Kelly is in our top 5 earners in the squad, this is a no brainer. Miggy and Hayden have shown how hard it is to move on average players for a decent fee, so even if we had to go short for 5 months and sign a replacement in the Summer, I'd be up for it.

Didn’t we manage with the same amount of CBs last year without Kelly?

That included European competition as well.

Manage is a strong word. Forgotten how easily teams were getting past us at the back around this time last year? There were a number of reasons for that of course but remember we are one Hall injury or suspension away from Dan Burn at left back which means the likes of Chris Wood scoring hat tricks for fun at SJP.

And are we really okay with leaving the CL charge to Lascelles if it comes down to it. Things are going well right now but ffs you have to be prepared in football.

Yes we do need a forward but sell your deadwood midfielders/forwards to get him not essential defensive backup.

Targett would prob get the nod at LB. And you’re picking out a performance when Burn had just returned from a lengthy lay off.

Kelly is basically just an expensive Paul Dummett at the moment.

For ref; I think he is better player than he is showing for us but he is behind Botman and Burn for LCB.

But gives us an £11m profit on the player we have had for six months, is on big wages and has only four starts for us.

No it really doesn’t, by the time you add his signing fee and agent fees into the equation the PSR benefit would be marginal.

He’s 26, he covers 2 positions - potentially for the next 5 years. The other players we have that can provide same positional cover are old/contracts ending, so you’d have to replace him which you couldn’t do for anywhere like the PSR profit he’d generate.

Manager rates him which is good enough for me, selling him would be mental from a squad development pov.

Targett and Tino both provide adequate cover at left back. Even Tripps or Burn could play there if we’re blighted with injuries.

We have next to no cover at CF. A kid who the manager doesn’t trust to play in important games and Wilson, a great servant but will he play again this season? Your guess is as good as mine.

At RW we have Murphy who, thank Christ, has hit a purple patch and given our front line balance but we’ve seen spells like this from before and he’s never been able to sustain it. Our reserve is Miggy, who the manager seems to have given up on. It remains the single area of the squad that hasn’t been upgraded since the takeover.

The squad is imbalanced. If we get a generous bid for a defender who isn’t used much or fancied by the manager, don’t be surprised if he is sold and the money is reinvested in areas of the squad in greater need.

Defences constantly getting in behind us and targeting lack of pace at the back was a recurring theme for many weeks, not just the Forrest game.

I don't blame Burn for it at all, it's just an example of how quickly things can turn in football and we didn't have the resources to adapt. Kelly is the only other defender we have now from that point.

Targett is the Wilson of LBs. Trippier seems to be past it. Lascelles and Krafth are injury prone. Schar and Burn are getting on. Botman just returned from a potentially career threatening injury. This is why Howe went for Kelly. Unless we have a replacement we keep him.

does he? You’d think he’d be getting more minutes if that were the case

He’s a squad player, that’s what he was bought for. Eddie’s signed him twice.

He was fine the season before. The reason the defence struggled last year was because the midfield didn’t have the energy for the press. If you play a high line and fail to press the ball correctly, you’re fucked.

We are debating something we have no idea about anyway. IF we could re-invest the money into a CF or RW this window then I’d prefer we did that. If not then just hold onto him. It’s upto Big Mitch. That’s why we pay him the big bucks. Not just to keep him in jeans with a suit top.

Howe went for Kelly because he was the 2nd best CB available on a free after Tosin went to Chelsea

Thing is Kelly is not about this year he’s about squad depth for the next 4-5 years.
