he took us from the brink of relegation to the 3rd division for the first time in our history to rampant runaway champions the next season.

he finished 3rd in the premier league the next season playing breathtaking football, qualifying for europe for the first time in 2 decades.

finished 6th the next season and runners up the following one ro a man utd team managed by the premier league greatest manager (the whisky soaked scottish cunt). we were unlucky to come up against that man utd team, keegan didn't blow it.

he was the catalyst for transforming the ground from a barren, sparsely populated shithole in to modern, sold out, 2nd biggest stadium in the country.

honestly man, howe isn't fit to lace his boots, I hope he goes on to warrant comparison. but as it stands, to suggest he does is nothing short of fucking outrageous.

in my opinion.  :)

all of this is true, but keegan wouldn't last a second in the modern game, which i think is the point gemmill is making.

have you heard steve howay talk about their coaching sessions? there was zero tactical information. he just assembled a squad of flair players and they played 5 a side. one of the greatest motivational managers of all time, and a club legend, no doubt but howe is the right manager for this era. if he goes on to win the league cup, he'll have a statue outside the ground.

if we win the league cup and a statue appears of howe I'd walk away from this shit show forever..

anybody who even think there's a genuine comparison between keegan and howe has no grasp whatsoever of how low this club had sunk during the 80s, the glorious exception to that decade?

when keegan played for us.

Equally Howe would've been fucked in that era. Players weren't up for soppy videos, hugs etc and expressions of love every press conference. You can't compare eras really.

Agreed. But then you’re got Eddie parking his car over the water meter manhole at Dean Court to stop the ground being cut off when they were staring relegation to the conference in the face….hes very largely responsible for taking that club to the premier league in 5 seasons….

Theyre very different personalities and wildly different in regards to their playing careers but they are both the most important figures in the modern history of each club…

I know. IHe’ll have to win a trophy to be viewed in the same bracket as Keegan. But I was making the point they are very similar figures …

I live in Poole btw. I’d like it if you could take a bit more care of your geographical assumptions tbh :huff:

Howe of course did manage to take us from the brink of relegation from the PL to top 4 in the following season with largely the same group of players - and I'll plead ignorance to the 80s as I wasn't alive for half of it. I'm not really saying Howe is a club legend or anything here mind, so I'm not comparing him to Keegan on that front. But as a manager, I (and others) have actually said this a few times and general sentiment has been supportive, hence my comment. Fair enough though, doesn't speak for everyone ;)

I loved Keegan too btw, I'm not really laying waste to him with the statement - just observing that Howe has genuinely been that good for us that I think he warrants inclusion in the same breath personally in terms of his actual abilities as a manager. Not what he has achieved, per se.

Used to be the W's, Watford, Wigan and Wimbledon etc, now it's B's, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton. Fair play to them but they can fuck off tbh.

I lived in Newcastle during that era and I remember keegan as fondly as you do. The whole town was buzzing when the entertainers were in their pomp. I was a teenager at the time and fell in love with the bloke.

The thing that evaded Keegan which could elevate Howe in how they’re regarded in the history books is silverware.

Yeah at the time you lived in Gloucestershire next to a Gymkhana and no doubt several minor members of the aristocracy who inhabit them :D

Oh we have the same on bluemoon. I suspect every forum has them. We had stand up or sit down for a pee in the 115 charges thread not so long ago.

Wouldn't swap Howe for anyone right now. Rayvin hit the nail on the head, he's a top coach and he gets the club and the city. Also we haven't seen his ceiling yet. Aye obviously Pep has the tons of success but he's never taken a relegation threatened club to the CL and cup finals. And this story may yet have a way to go.

I'm with those saying you can't really compare Keegan and Howe. Different eras with tons that has changed. Considering the impact Keegan had and how he pulled back the club from the brink you could still say he's still the more important manager. Howe has been incredible and as I said I wouldn't have anyone else but you could argue if we hadn't gotten him with our resources now we eventually still would have found a way to get where we are right now.

If he wins a trophy though... That's everything. Everything missing from Nufc and something that could herald the start of a new era. That would make him the most important figure here in the last few decades.
