I know 'what ifs' are often despised on here but fuck it, I'm doing it anyway. These 5 games, man:

Southampton (H) - 90+6min equaliser - 2pts dropped
Watford (A) - 72min equaliser - 2pts dropped
Norwich (H) - 79min equaliser - 2pts dropped
Man Utd (H) - 71min equaliser - 2pts dropped
Watford (H) - 88min  equaliser - 2pts dropped

Had we stuck out for the win in those, we'd be comfortably top half of the table.

If this had've occurred the pressure everyone got for the Saudi human rights would've been chicken feed compared to the pressure to keep Bruce as he'll have done a 'great job'.

The difference is now that we have the defensive solidity to hang on. We simply didn’t then due to the personnel.

It's amazing that we've largely done it with just Burn and Targett largely being the difference. Confidence is everything.

Well I think they’re both solid players too. Which we’ve seldom had in defence.

They are. What I'm getting at is it's not just the addition of those 2 (3 if we include Trippier), it's the team's mentality too.

Aye, if everyone is fit then there’s only Schar getting a game in the back 4 (of those who were here pre-Jan).

He seems to have found his mojo again which is great to see. That said, I though Lascelles was massively improved too. Playing alongside better players does make a difference. Proves beyond doubt that Lascelles isn't a natural leader though. Tripper captain for me and in his absence, Dan Burn.

A lot of what has prevented us conceding many / allowing us to go on this run is the midfield exerting control on matches in a way we haven’t seen for ages. That’s with players who were already at the club and previously struggling too. Bit when that didn’t happen at the weekend the collective mentality plus those additions in defence were the difference.

Aye the way we are owning the middle of the park, and with player who were struggling under Bruce is remarkable and a convenient two fingers up to old cabbagehead as well

Listening to that podcast with Trippier where he as good as confirms the players themselves felt they were given too much time off. The players knew it, the media knew it, the fans knew it but still Bruce and his cronies stood by and continued to bleat 'it on the advice of professional sports scientists/psychologists. The utter fucking useless tit.

Louise Taylor talking sense for once wrote an article about Bruce being out of step with the modern game. That was when he left Sunderland more than 10 years ago. You get the distinct impression he’s learnt very little since then too.

if we get bottman or whoever in the summer, lascelles will probably be the one to be sold. he'll do a decent job at a lower table premier league club - the kind of club we used to be. might get around £15m for him as he's english and still relatively young

Absolutely. Too many fans of Steve Bruce’s holiday camp previously & they’ve suffered for it. Fernandez I rate, Manquillo is decent and a hard worker. The rest I’m not fussed about.

Lascelles needs the armband taking off him at the end of the season. K-Trips is the new captain for me.

Remember when Bruce went on a holiday during the first international break, about a month into the season despite having basically the entire squad available for training, and the media actually defended him

Precisely. It's shit like that which boiled my piss and manifested my hatred for him. He was being paid handsomely, we were visibly falling apart football wise and he was taking the absolute piss.

The final insult being the media claiming we were unreasonable towards him. A humongous fuck off to them! Cunts....
