When Shelvey played well under Benitez  he reminded me a little bit of Paul Scholes at times. I’m not suggesting he’s anywhere near that level but he seemed to easily find pockets of space on the pitch. He was usually available when we had possession and would rarely give the ball away (despite not being scared to pass the ball forwards). Under Bruce he looked like he couldn’t give a fuck

It would be a lot easier to find a place for Shelvey in a Benitez side, we tended to sit quite deep, and that meant players who weren't the quickest were less exposed. Shelvey might cover a lot of ground, but he does it slowly.

If Howe's going to play a pressing game, he's going to find it hard to get Shelvey on board. If you watch him, his tackles are always a second or two late, he just doesn't have the acceleration to get his foot in on time. On the ball he is class, just don't think he's cut out at all for a quick passing side.

Looks fucking wound up already

Imagine the contrast between Howe and Bruce.

Eddie has been in work since 7am and he’s still running rings around the training pitch and stirring the lads on.

Bruce ffs

Joelinton unsurprisingly has a look of utter bewilderment on his face as Howe is giving out instruction. In fairness to him maybe his English still isn't great.

Or maybe it's just that he is shite.

Imagine the players actually making space for themselves to receive the ball, and in better areas. That's what Howe seemed to be trying to get across to them. The team is so static and disjointed, that if they can take in and reproduce his instruction in games, it's going to make us look like an actual coherent unit.

Most of them do tbf, Shelvey looks like he's been asked to pick up dog turds all around the ground. The only one who looks remotely interested in running is Lewis.

Howe actually being physically able to run is a key distinction in and of itself.
