Did anyone else read Jeremy Clarksons comments in the Times today. I thought he came accross as a bit of a arse.

CO2? I care more about my gear knob

By Jeremy Clarkson

I CARE more about the colour of the gear knob on my Mercedes SLK than the amount of carbon dioxide it produces.

I’m not going show any interest in what comes out the back until there is 100 per cent agreement among scientists that CO2 will cause catastrophic climate change.

For every scientist who claims that sea levels are going to rise 28 metres, I will find you an equally well-qualified one who says this is rubbish. If someone brings me conclusive evidence that I will save the world by switching to an ox then I will go out and buy one.

But until then it seems crazy to close down the Land Rover factory in Solihull and throw thousands of people out of work.

In a few years’ time people will ask: “Oh God, did we not give money to Africa because we spent it on wind farms?” Even if it turns out that we do need green cars, the Toyota Prius loved by many salad eaters is spectacularly ungreen. It has both an engine and an electric motor, so you have to have two factories producing them and churning out emissions.

It’s also beaten by just about every diesel in terms of how much fuel you burn.

Don’t believe the figures they give. I have thoroughly tested a Prius and it does 40mpg. I’m talking about proper driving, not pootling about like a little old lady.

I also tested a little VW Lupo diesel in the same way and got 70mpg.

The Prius is also badly made and doesn’t feel like it offers much protection. You really will be wearing your heart on your sleeve if you have an accident.

If you really insist on being green, you’re better off with a Lupo.

He sounds like a tobacco company executive denying a link between smoking and health problems. I normally like him too.

and if you troll further back you'll see that I used both the bus AND the Metro. I made comment about the scummers on the bus AND seperately the scummers on the Metro.

you're both planks to be quite frank.

 Yeah, right. In the post I quoted you referred to 'watching the plebs standing in the pissing rain waiting for a bus that's ten minutes late.'

Fucking students man, no common sense :jerkit:

in the post you quoted I made no mention of the Metro, so if you can't make the quantum leap from discussing one method of pikey transport to another, then you're a lesser man than I gave you credit for.

Round 3 to me to be honest

Even by Clarkson's standards he's being a complete dick in that article. I had always assumed he was firmly tongue in cheek when it came to the environmental damage cars cause do but after a while you realise he probably isn't. He'll be in denial no matter what happens to the climate. Never mind that oil is finite and will run out soon anyway.

I used to get a Bus and a Metro to work and back every day for a couple of years. Never bothered me, listened to music and read the paper, went to work before the kids went in and finished after they'd gone home. From the first day of the extension to Sunderland I found myself waiting longer and longer for a Metro and the whole system seemed to have gone a bit shit. After a few months of this I got pissed off and bought a car. Luckily I can park at work, but if I couldn't then I wouldn't be that bothered about getting back on public transport, use it for the match no problem. Does seem to have got a little bit expensive lately though. Thank the Lord for the Magpie Mover.

The closer to Toon you live the worse it is I think. I pay £61.50 for a 4 week all zone pass. That's just under £2.20 a day. That gets me at least 20 miles a day though so it's quite reasonable.

When it costs £1.20 to go 2 stops or whatever, that's shoocking, but they want people to get passes don't they.

If I lived closer, I'd probably cycle it.

£2.60 for a single from Tynemouth to Newcastle.

Comparing that to the price in virtually any foreign city I've been to (including the US) it is absolutely outragious. Plus the metro runs late, is infrequemt, is dirty, stops at tea time, and is full of scumbags. No thanks.

I agree with SLP mind, those mackem bastards cocked it up for both of us. The irony is they don't even use it. :jerkit:

It's true like, I'd been using the Metro for work for a coupleof years and never had any problems with it, the pass was actually a bargain as I needed to get a bus as well. The morning they opened the extension...chaos. It didn't get much better, I stuck with it for a couple of months and then thought...fuck it. It's far too easy to dodge, they need to sort that out first.

Thing is, Nexus are in denial. I've lost count about the number of attacks that people have either told me personally about or that have been in the papers just in the past few months. One person was put on life support from an unprovoked attack at Tynemouth ffs. Yet all the management say is it's a very safe system. Bollocks, I know from experience this is a lie! They don't even bother answering letters; they won't acknowledge a problem. Same with their quarterly results on punctiality etc, it's obviously all lies, no way are 95% of metros on time.

If it wasn't for the fact that some people on here seem vaguely satisfied with the system I'd like the whole system to fail catastrophically, get these twats out a job, get rid of the Sunderland extension, and start again.

I was talking to a manager from NEXUS who said the problem is the track they share with Arriva trains after Pelaw. Apparently they fucked it up and that sharing of the line is what causes the most delays, NEXUS haven't got a clue how to deal with it.

I use the Metro all the time and don't have a problem with it apart from thinking it's too expensive and (as SLP says) far too easy to avoid paying (which probably explains why the fares are so high). That said, I only go from Benton to the Toon/Gateshead so I probably avoid most of the North Shields/Waalsend/Byker/Walker heid cases.

Even without the shared track, the fact they increased the length of the line without buying new rolling stock should have been a clue there may be a problem. Clueless tbh.

I used to go from Whitley to Byker every day and it wasn't too bad, a couple of nutters on the tea time one back but no trouble that I saw. However, I imagine later on that part of the track is a bit tasty.
