EXCLUSIVE Wigan boss a shock contender after Shepherd talks in Barbados

By Alan Nixon

WIGAN boss Paul Jewell has emerged as a surprise con tender for the Newcastle job - with a formal approach in the pipeline after Sunday's Carling Cup Final.

The Latics party heading to Cardiff for the club's first major cup final will be rocked to discover Jewell's name is high on the hit list of Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, who is working his way down to a handful of elite candidates.

Shepherd has even had an informal chat with Wigan supremo Dave Whelan while the pair were playing golf on holiday in Barbados in the last 48 hours.

Jewell has impressed Shepherd - and the rest of football - with the way he has taken Wigan to the final and guided his club to the top half of the Premiership, playing the game attractively.

Jewell's Wigan have beaten Newcastle twice, heightening Shepherd's interest as he scours the globe for the next Toon manager.

Shepherd is taking it easy in his search for Graeme Souness's successor, fact-finding about the possibles like Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce and even Alan Curbishley.

Scours the globe. :D

Big risk IMO. Especially from a man adamant that he "knows he must get it right this time". We shall see......

"Funnily" enough, today I'm doing the new Westlife single for the karaoke company I work for....it's bad even by their standards.

I am finding motivation something of a challenge.....

*weeps*  :D

Should be quite easy, just take the last one they did and move a few notes around...TADA!

Louis Walsh has a lot to answer for.

Exactly. Instead of this countrys most talented singer songwriters being in the charts, they're reduced to sitting in cold shanty huts in the middle of Northumberland, turning talentless boy band tunes into karaoke classics for £2 an hour. Sickening.
