Coco to sign on loan?

From the Sun ;)

GRAEME SOUNESS will today sign Italy defender Francesco Cocu to shore up the leaky defence he blamed for Toon going out of Europe.

Robbie Elliott’s kamikaze backpass let in Deportivo’s Pedro Munitis to wrap up victory in the Intertoto Cup semi-final.

Boss Souey groaned: “You can’t legislate for the way we gave away the second goal.

“I would hate to think we will give more away like that during the season.”

Cocu will arrive on Tyneside today with a view to a season-long loan.

The Inter Milan full-back, 27, has 17 caps and played in the last World Cup at left-back with Paolo Maldini, the AC Milan star, moving inside to accommodate him.

Newcastle clearly see this position as a problem with Celestine Babayaro constantly breaking down.

But Cocu’s arrival is too late to save Toon’s Euro dream.

Too little and too late, but at least we will be able to concentrate on the league.

Italian Job For Coco?

By Gary Oliver and Ian Willis

INTER Milan full-back Francesco Coco was flying into Tyneside on Thursday to discuss a possible move to Newcastle United.

Coco, who turned 28 on Monday, started his career with Vicenza in 1997/98 before moving to AC Milan in 2000. He was at Milan for two years, during which time he had a loan spell at Barcelona where he made 31 times for the Catalan club.

He moved to Inter as part of the deal that took Clarence Seedorf in the opposite direction. He played against Newcastle in the 2-2 Champions League draw between Newcastle and Inter in the San Siro back in March 2003.

United have been looking to boost their defensive options further following the arrival of centre-back Craig Moore.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told nufc.co.uk: "Francesco Coco is flying into Newcastle from Italy today for talks."

Coco, once dubbed "the new Paolo Maldini" by the Italian press, is a former team-mate of new Magpie midfielder Emre from their days together at Inter.

He has been linked with a move to the Premiership in the past, and has also attracted interest from the likes of Ajax and Olympiakos.

Capped 17 times by Italy, Coco made two appearances for his country in the 2002 World Cup, including the elimination at the hands of co-hosts South Korea.

and from www.nufc.com

United have now confirmed earlier press reports that the club are interested in signing  Italian international wing back Francesco Coco (actually the reports say Cocu - but he's a middle-aged Dutch midfield trundler).

The official site confirms that the 28 year-old left-sided player is en route to Tyneside for transfer talks.

Coco began his career with AC Milan and was part of their championship-winning sides in 1996 and 1999.

While on their books he also turned out for Venezia and Torino in loan deals, before moving on to Barcelona in 2001.

After a year Coco returned to the San Siro, this time with Inter - where he played alongside toon new boy Emre, although he's only started six Serie A games in the last two seasons.

Cocu was an unused sub when Inter won 4-1 on Tyneside in November 2002, but played the full 90 when the sides drew in Milan the following March.

His time with Inter is coming to an end and he's available on a free transfer (some sources claiming he's actually been released), with Olympiakos, Everton and Bolton linked with a move for him recently.

If the story turns out to be a goer, then there are two immediate concerns - one being that he is said to have been turned down by Ajax in recent days amid concerns over his fitness, the other being that he has something of a playboy reputation back in his homeland.

As well as a clothing label (77urban) he's opened a number of shops including four (and a bar) in the same street of his home town, Legnano near Milan.

Known for taking the number 77 squad shirt, Coco has also been photographed with a succession of "girlfriends" including models and a former Miss Israel - meaning he's a regular in Italian gossip mags.

I'm just shocked that the Sun broke a story, despite getting the players name wrong.......actually, does that count!?!?

Would be a good signing IMO. Two strikers, and I think we'll finish top 5 again next May.

Good player when fit. 6 games in 2 years shows that doesn't happen often enough.

Babayaro and Coco keeping each other company on the treatment bench, taking £50k a week home each. Great ;)
