Scottish Mag 3
Cagliari attacking sensation Mauro Esposito is a summer target for Newcastle United, according to reports. The Premiership’s Bianconeri are said to be at the front of a lengthy queue for the 26-year-old winger. Although the Naples-born individual has struggled for form this term, numerous outfits are ready to swoop – especially if Cagliari are relegated. Palermo, Roma and Fiorentina are said to be monitoring his situation, but a move to England could be on the cards. Esposito, formerly of Pescara and Udinese, first hit the headlines in 2003-04 when he netted 17 goals in 40 Serie B games. He confirmed his ability in the top-flight last term, when he bagged an incredible 16 in just 34 ties. His speedy performances understandably caught the eye of Italy boss Marcello Lippi who handed him an Azzurri jersey. Esposito, who dreams of one day wearing the Napoli shirt, has drifted away from international contention this term, though. It’s unclear at this stage how much Newcastle are prepared to bid, even if Cagliari are said to be looking for something between £5m and £7m.
