It is obvious that Aston Villa today is better than us (not much better either) and that it has a solid base, but that today it cannot give it more than to be Top10 or Top12. But the project that we should have is much bigger. And if the team manages to avoid relegation, we should be ahead of Aston Villa in the short term. This is the issue. Right now, this season (and likely the next 1-2) Aston Villa will finish above Newcastle United. For a 28yr old player, he'll want to be playing at the highest level possible. His salary will likely be similar wherever he plays, so realistically it's about profile.

Diego21 2135
Just a hint of something that is not going to happen, but could. If Burnley and Watford win their pending matches, Aston Villa would end the first round just 6 points from relegation. What I mean is that they are not much superior to us. In fact, they are in a rather mediocre moment for the players they have. 22 points is a very poor background and their only luck is that there are 3-4 teams (among which we are) that are in a horrible way. As a general rule, the 40 points have always been sought to ensure salvation, but for about 4-5 years a team can be saved with a lot less because there are always 3 teams well below the established level. Digne needs a team with an immediate project, it is true, because he is 28 years old and he cannot wait. But to join a team for six months ... You can come here and fight for relegation (and if you don't get it, leave the team) or you can go to Aston Villa to fight for nothing (or we'll see if by not releasing if they accumulate 3 or 4 bad results in a row) and next year keep fighting for nothing. Digne is a talented player but defensively suspect, and clearly doesn't like being told to be a Benitez style left back ( more focus on defensive than offensive). if it were me, i'd go to Villa short term and see how the season pans out then jump ship and join Newcastle when / if they are safe, and have a top 8 challenging team... (2024 onwards perhaps). even then i doubt he is good enough to push on towards a champions league place, or to fit in a side that does that. Gemmill 44894
The Villa stuff is quite weird. I agree with Diego, they're not much further up the league than us, but I think 11 points is enough to make them look safe, and whether we like it or not, they do have more of a "name" manager than us. At least whilst he remains unproven. Whether he turns into a good manager or not remains to be seen, but I'm happier with Howe. I am weirded out by the media reaction to Villa though. Listening to the Athletic Podcast this morning and they're talking about a push for Europe, and how they're "probably" still a little bit behind Spurs in terms of their progression. Probably?! They had Dean Smith and were squarely in the relegation battle 10 games ago lads. Very strange. Not a huge surprise cos they've got a media darling manager now, but I do wonder whether these blokes are aware of the sudden switch in the way they're talking about Villa just because of Gerrard. wykikitoon 20151
By the sounds of it, Eddie Howe doesn't want relegation release clauses in. If that's the case he's been on some SERIOUS spice.

It's Gerrard. He could have been sat with Maxwell at Balmoral and the cunts would still wank over him.

Gemmill 44894
I mean he's got a point. I actually misread and thought wykiki had said he didn't want to buy players by triggering release clauses. Which felt weird.

If Burnley and Watford win their matches win their matches, we're further in the mire than we are now. You've only needed c35pts to ensure survival in the last 20yrs or so. I understand their is a logic to saying Newcastle United are an exciting project and all that, but footballers (and their representatives) will look at recent history and the status quo. Aston Villa are a team with some momentum, who are not in a relegation fight, and are a 'big club'. Newcastle United are a 'big club', but haven't yet seen the fruits of the blood money. Tell you what, if we'd signed Trippier, Botman, a striker like Isak, and then gone for Digne, he may have been more interested.

Dr Gloom 21924
the problem we face in this window is a lot of deals are done at the death when the selling club finally shows its hand. the likes of botman, digne etc could still happen on or near deadline day, which of course is too late for us
Gemmill 44894
Well let's see. If we pull off results in our two January matches and then land a load of signings on deadline day, we're laughing. Although all signs suggest Digne will have been at Villa for a couple of weeks by then, but he can suck it.
