Aye, without knowing the specificity of the tests false positives are a real issue when prevalence is low. Still, there does seem to be a lot of asymptomatic carriers. 85% in the Northumbria outbreak, where prevalence was sufficiently high this shouldn't have been an issue. That and all the other catastrophic decisions previously. Like locking down too late, not locking down properly, waiting too long to make wearing masks compulsory, not really making wearing masks compulsory, not enforcing restrictions, coming out of lockdown too early, encouraging people to socialise, allowing hundreds of thousands of students to travel to university when they knew infection rates amongst that age group were high, etc, et-fucking-cetera I agree with this 100% 2 hours ago, Monkeys Fist said: We’re an island. Of all the countries in Europe, we should have been the one to be able to keep the virus out/eradicate it quickly from our population, by imposing strict measures. If we weren’t run by a balding weasel from Durham, we could have. Yeah they knew it was coming & just sat back & watched it. Then eventually shit themselves when the realised how dangerous it was. This could have all been avoided. Or at least been nothing like it is now
NJS 4414
The thing about the island thing is that the excuse for not closing Heathrow etc was that tens of thousands arrive every day which is obviously incomparable with New Zealand - however nobody asked why the fuck so many needed to come at that time (March/April/May). Tourists should have been told to fuck off for starters and they should have allowed repatriation with quarantine but its business travellers that get me. I understand that the UK being such a hub for business is one of the reasons we were hit harder but why the hell didn't they ask travellers if their journey was that necessary? In fact they should have had to explain their reasons.
trooper 940
This from Sky News England is expected to be carved into three different lockdown tiers next week, with millions of people facing tougher restrictions as the government tries to get a handle on rising coronavirus cases and hospital admissions. Pubs and restaurants as well as leisure facilities are expected to be closed in parts of the North put into the strictest tier, according to two sources who have seen blueprints of the current plans. Under the proposals, people living in the strictest tier - tier three - are also expected to be ordered not to have any social contact with anyone outside their household in any setting, according to one person familiar with the blueprints being drawn up by the government. The strictest tier will also come with a financial compensation package for businesses forced to shut up shop. A second source who has also seen the tiering proposals said tier two restrictions would be the same as those currently in the North East and Merseyside - no household mixing in homes or gardens, and no household mixing in hospitality settings. Advertisement Those in tier one will be the most light-touch tier, with the public expected to follow the rule of six and maintain social distancing. Whitehall sources stressed that nothing has yet been signed off. "There's still a lot of work to be done," they told Sky News. trooper 940
Miss T was on a Forestry School Leaders course for her school back in March. It meant travelling to a forest in the middle of nowhere in Durham. When lockdown came it was suspended. In September they sent emails saying the course would start back up on monday of this week. Miss T. e mailed back saying she didnt feel comfortable mixing with 20 other teachers all from different schools & wouldnt be attending. She received an e mail from the leader saying everything would be safe & she had nothing to worry about. She still didnt go. Yesterday this was sent to everyone on the course to say. One of the teachers on the course has tested positive hope to see you all tomorrow. This after trying to reassure Miss T. everything would be safe social distancing etc. Seems like her intuition was right

Having a hard time with the 18 year old and her getting a bit pissed off with her not being able see friends anymore but going to work just like her boyfriend does and like we all are. I'm not even sure the established relationship counts atm so we're only trying to put our foot down with meeting friends in bars/restaurants. This is shit. These restrictions won't bring R down to below 1, so at best cases will plateau. There's no way out of a tier once you're in it. Alex 35666
Would I be right in thinking people who’ve had it and were asymptomatic could catch it again with serious symptoms and long term side effects? This is my worry tbh. As if two weeks is anywhere near enough to get it down and even then, the cycle will continue. Keeping the north in the highest tier while London runs amok seems very convenient
