The scientist from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene told the Today programme: "I don’t think the measures have gone anywhere near far enough." "I suspect we will see very stringent measures coming in place throughout the UK at some point, but it will be too late again," he said. He said that we will have let the epidemic "double and double and double again" before stricter measures are introduced, which will mean "the worst of both worlds" because it will mean "putting the brakes on the epidemic for a very long time, very hard". “Insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting different outcomes”- Fred West, or someone else who isn’t Einstein. There was supposed to be a rota but a few teachers didnt turn in last time & she did their days for them. Like I say it didnt bother her last time but I know shes worried this time. Aye my lass is the same. Doesn't like going in, says all the staff are worried because it's blatantly not safe - even with all the guidelines they've put in place. North Fawdon Primary has had to shut cos 7 teachers have caught it. 900 state schools nationwide are not fully open cos they've had outbreaks. Sorry like but the stuff about it being safe to keep schools open is total bullshit. Looks like it might take some teachers and pupils dying for the message to land though. I don't have the answers, but keeping kids off school for a whole year would be pretty catastrophic for their life chances, especially the disadvantaged ones. I think education and healthcare/social care have to continue or we're genuinely fucked as a nation. I don't care too much about all the other sectors, just don't let people die needlessly and don't let kids suffer.

Which do you think is preferable, muddle through the current year with constant stops and starts and bunches of kids off for 2 weeks at a time self-isolating, entire year groups having to take time away from school, those of exam age particularly disrupted.....or call the whole thing off, protect pupils, teachers and their families that they'll take the virus home to, and repeat the school year for everyone next year. It is totally bogus to claim that kids and teachers can go to school, mix with other kids/teachers, and go home to their families, and we just don't need to worry about spread of the virus from that. That's how you do it. This current situation is so sub-optimal that you're leaving kids behind anyway but pretending that you aren't. It's mostly just you parents don't want your kids at home. You had the little cunts.

Renton 22008
I don't think its that easy. Any teacher or parent can tell you most kids lose competencies over the 6 week summer holiday break. To have a years break might put them back 2 years, not 1. And what happens with reception when you start again, double class sizes? How do you square that circle? The other really important thing is their social skills and wellbeing, kids need to socialise for their mental health imo. Isolating an only child for a year is beyond cruel. And then there's the growing inequality gap and issues with abuse. I appreciate concern for your wife's health and indirectly yours. But plenty of people are being forced to take risks they didn't sign up for, some of whom are also really poorly paid (care workers). I think yes, we do have to make the best of a bad situation. I'm not aware of a single country in the world that has completely halted education on these time scales.
Toonpack 9978
What Gemmill said, we start a year earlier than most anyway, Gov't need to work it out (gawd help us!!!) set up remote to keep education ticking over until this is under control. It's a new situation, needs new answers, shoehorning "normal" back won't work. Edited September 23, 2020 by Toonpack

And who do you think is most disadvantaged by that? To Renton's point about kids going backwards, they can still do some remote learning this year to mitigate that. Of course it's not an ideal solution but it's better than the current setup. But if you lads would prefer to pile up some dead teachers and schoolkids so you don't have to have your own kids at home, we'll stick with that. Howmanheyman 33916
I know you've all been frantic worrying, but worry no more, my test came back negative. Daughter had to leave school and isolate till I got the results, got them this morning, sent her in then her mate gets a call on the way telling them a classmate, (not in their bubble but whom they've had contact with) has tested positive so it was about turn before she even arrived. Apparently just hearing her mate's mam has been informed she can go back in so expecting a similar call pretty soon. It's all a bit disruptive, isn't it? I called in work and told my test was negative and they didn't even discuss the fact I'm not feeling too clever it was just a 'see you tonight'.

Renton, you had a 3 month panic attack at the start of the year about having to sit next to someone in a small room. Ayatollah Hermione 14069
I think the sooner kids learn the crushing, disappointing realities of life, the better. This has been an ideal education in that regard.
Toonpack 9978
The sooner Government(s) realise this is deep shit and it ain't going away any time soon and plan a "new" way of living/working the better. Those that do will be ahead of the game whilst those mired in "getting back to old normal" will continue to lurch from fuck up to fuck up and wave to wave for the foreseeable. Those that continue to deny that, are brewing up one hell of a backlash when the reality becomes apparent (bit like what'll happen with Brexit for us). As an aside, I reckon these repeated "armed forces" references are so they can (and will) get army on the streets in advance of Brexit because of Covid and can then avoid having to get them suddenly out for the unrest that I fear is guaranteed because of Brexit, it'll all be played as down to Covid (and the EU obvs). My paranoia rules just now :-) (but I did read Shirer's Rise and Fall a few times and we're well into it).

Renton 22008
Oof. I wonder if that data factors in all the mental trauma kids will suffer? I'm pribavly going to come across the twat here but tbh I value children's lives more than adults. At the very least they deserve proper consideration, i know of kids who aren't coping well. trooper 940
Boris obviously never had a plan for the 2nd wave. Now his scientific advisors have shown what's coming it feels like he's totally ignored them. Wales, Scotland & Ireland have all announced much more stringent measures than England. I'm probably one of the most placid blokes you'd ever meet. Yet everytime I see Boris & hear him mumbling & bumbling on i feel like punching him in the face. He's gambling with peoples lives here the stupid pillock.

This is payback for all the daft cunts that had 4 and 5 kids in the middle of a population crisis cos "ah we just need another one, our kids are so great".
