ewerk 30641
A short full lockdown is the only way to get this under control. Unfortunately the government is going to leave it far too late and we're going to end up with a longer lockdown than if we did it now.

It’s what quite a few of us have been saying for quite a while, isn’t it? The worst of both worlds in economic terms and in terms of the spread of the disease. It seemed like staggering incompetence first time round but repeating the same mistake is criminal.
Renton 21637
Of course they are going to leave it too late, again. And the result will be more deaths and greater economic damage. It was interesting yesterday hearing the suggestion that the North never really got the virus controlled sufficiently during lockdown, unlike the South. So when lockdown was released, which was primarily for the benefit of London, this was always going to hit the North. The tories eh, what a bunch of scallywags. ewerk 30641
My guess is that they're going to wait until the Nightingale hospitals are near capacity. What's the point in paying for them if we're not going to get the use of them, eh?

I mean, we've effectively just done what they originally said they were going to do 7months ago. Under 65s are getting it at a rate of knots and are largely recovering. Over 65s either lock themselves indoors forever or risk dying if the catch it

trooper 940
the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) reveal a call to action three weeks ago. "The re-imposition of a package of measures is required urgently," it warned on 21 September. It added: "The more rapidly these interventions are put in place the greater the reduction in Covid-related deaths and the quicker they can be eased. "Not acting now to reduce cases will result in a very large epidemic with catastrophic consequences."

I'm not actively on Twitter so not able to respond to him, but since when does being an ICU doctor qualify you in mathematics or epidemiology? Viral spread is by definition exponential, not linear. It will always be exponential when R is above 1. But R is much lower than in March so will be flatter, might even appear linear if you force the data. I'd add another difference this time is regional variation, taking aggregated data of the country as a whole masks the issue happening in the North. You're a qualified accountant aren't you? I assumed you needed quite a good understanding of maths to do this?
trooper 940
Boris Johnson wants North East to agree to tougher lockdown rules including pub closures The Government says it wants North East leaders to agree to tougher measures but it could impose them on the region The Prime Minister's spokesman said talks about introducing "the most severe types of local action" were continuing. And he said that while Mr Johnson hoped to reach agreement with local council leaders and mayors, "the Government does have the ability to impose measures if it's considered that that's what's needed."
