Miguel Almiron

Selling Almiron even without signing a replacement/upgrade is pretty a gamble the club has to make in regards to PSR. We need to make money from sales to balance losses from transfer fees. The sale of Almiron was overdue and the chances to get decent money for him diminishing.

Even though it’s not being ideal in case Murphy gets injured or his purple patch ending we will still have the likes of Gordon, Barnes as well as Joelinton who can play there if really needed. I don’t think that we will sign a player just for the sake of it.

This is Murphy's 7th season at the club and it's only the last 3 months he's managed to play consistently well. We've been here before with Almiron.

tbf he's doing the same as he managed last season over a similar amount of games. I think the problem for Murphy was that Howe always preferred Miggy up until this season.

True, but I've always thought there was a player in there, maybe now he's had a consistent run and he's at peak fitness/fully Eddie'd, maybe, just maybe, the real Jacob Murphy is in the house.

It's not just his overall play, his understanding with Isak is superb, maybe having a striker Murphy has tuned into has helped too.

On the Miggy sale, we don't need a replacement or upgrade for him, what we want is a replacement and upgrade for Murphy, and on current form that'll have to be one hell of a player and will be very expensive.

We won't buy someone who'll walk into the team this month IMO, apart from the fact that would do nowt for morale, any new arrival will have to be Eddie'd so wouldn't play early. I suspect they'll go for a young Dibling type in the summer.

I think/hope it's this.

His passing is superb in the final third, I don't see how he could be purple patching that. He has more confidence now sure, but nothing stops that from continuing while he's getting games.

He is 29 and he has been a completely average lower half PL/good championship  player for all his career.

That's the thing, how many times in the past years has he played similar balls into a dangerous space but there wasn't a striker with the intelligence to be in the space, unlike Isak who seems to find space at will.

He's also two footed, stronger on the right but his left is OK.

But he's never been in an environment like he is now for all his career.

I think what at least I'm saying here is that I'm struggling to think who we are gonna bring in that will be as effective in the short term as Murphy is right now, and that as TP says, his partnership/understanding with Isak is a key part of that. Maybe if you stick him in any other team he goes back to being bang average, but with Isak on form he's looking very good indeed.

Im not sure what is going on here. Are we now saying Murphy is world class ?

He was shite 10 games ago. 😆

We all need to take a deep breath and have a real think about this.

he's proved he is a valuable squad player and has more to his game than miggy, who was a one trick pony playing at LW. do we gamble on him as our only specialist RW in the squad for the run in when champions league football is up for grabs? psr might force us to, i dunno, but it feels like a punt given what is at stake (securing CL football means we we're more likely to keep the likes of bruno and isak in the summer and we can then build the squad around them)

the ideal scenario is we sign a player that challenges him for a starting place in January. who cares if it takes whoever that player is a couple of months to be up to speed with what howe demands?  it's the same for every new signing - howe wants to take time to bed them in, fine. it would still be another body through the door and would give us depth in an area where we were already weak - even before the sale of alimiron. it's also means we won't have to promote someone like sanusi, who looks promising but very raw, in the event of a an injury crisis.

No-one is saying that, but he's a fucking effective RW for us right now and long may it continue.

I've certainly never called him shite, there are no shite footballers at this level.

P.S. No-one in this thread has suggested he doesn't need upgrading, the question is when.

I agree with lots of that, but I just don't think the RW we will have identified will be available this month and we won't (and shouldn't) compromise our preferred targets.

As I did in the summer, I still think RCB is #1 priority, even more so since Murphy's run of form, because to me Schar looks shot. Could (hopefully) be lack of games recently, but he's been a bit of a liability of late. You can carry average at RW (if Murph gets crocked) but you can't at CB.

it's been his poorest season since the takeover. i think botman did enough playing at CB on his wrong foot to keep his place.

i still think RW remains the obvious weak point of the squad, as i did in the summer. the one area that hasn't been upgraded since the takeover. we've got decent cover at CB when everyone is fit. hopefully lascelles isn't a million miles away from a return.

We have cover, but we don't have real quality or longevity at RCB, and certainly no pace at CB in general, they're all slow.

We need ugrades at RCB, RW and GK, if we sign one position this window my preference is RCB.

I agree. And it's a massive benefit of Murphy's outstanding recent form. The recruitment net can be broadened to consider a youngster to develop and compete for Murphy's spot rather than an established replacement.

Murphy has been nothing short of outstanding and one of our best players amongst some stellar performers in recent weeks.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking but I think Murph's form is more sustainable than the likes of Miggy in his purple patch because his game is built on simpler principles. Most of the time he is looking to receive the ball and play it quickly to Isak. They have a wonderful understanding between them too which helps both of them. He seems like a very intelligent and very humble player. It seems evident in the sense of a humility to appreciate what works and to do it without any superfluous fluff.

Murphy is one of the cleanest strikers of the ball we have and he's pretty good with his left foot. Needs a bit of time to get the shot off though, the kind of time being Jacob Murphy can sometimes allow. Same principle applies to his passing.

He used to be a lot worse IMO because he would commit to dribbling and have his head down, beat his man then run into a blind alley and eventually turn it over. He's got rid of it from his game for the most part making much better decisions about when to pass or dribble. He can still sometimes get caught on the ball or make a poor decision but he has greatly improved his onfield vision, knowing where our players are and also where the goal is (rather than the post). Currently deserving of a starting spot but would be best suited to being an impact sub coming on when the game is a little more open. I've never found him to be a good player defensively despite him covering a lot of ground. I love to see him do well as he's clearly a great lad who loves playing for us. Like Dan Burn he's part of our identity as well as our playing squad.

Gordon, Barnes and Joelinton have all looked out of place when played on the right. I'd like to see whether Willock could play there. As much as he seems to be either hot or cold/injured (most often cold) he has the physical attributes and attacking intent to be dangerous.
