You're letting nostalgia cloud your judgement. The dialogue is clunky, the acting from the leads is pretty fucking awful, the fight scenes are hilariously bad, the special effects weren't even any good at the time. Not to mention the casting. The kid in me loves that movie, but objectively it's got many, many flaws.

The Thing with Kurt Russell is nearer a remake of The Thing From Another world from the 50's but that's really an example of how it can be done well. Both using the same source material but in different ways. The recent Thing plot was almost identical iirc.

Watching it again and it's clear that the acting is pretty terrible too. There's some decent actors around that could do well in the roles and we've seen with Marvel movies that you can take something a bit silly and turn it into an enjoyable movie. See, even then, a young future pimms drinking shithouse was noting the fundamental flaws in the film and memorising them for the yet to be invented medium of internet forums where he would dissect those flaws in front of a captivated audience of philistines who just would not see the inherent moodmusic of the marvel films by comparison.

Anorthernsoul 1221
Watched The Pledge with Jack Nicholson directed by Sean Penn, as much as it it is grim it is a gripping film and a great performance from Nicholson.

Of course there's flaws in it but they don't stop it being far more enjoyable.
Renton 22002
Just seen Paddington 2. Surprisingly quite brilliant, better than the first which is some recommendation. If you've got kids 4+, see it in the cinema. Oh, last night saw La La Land on Netflix. Pleasently surprised.

I've never seen 2 but if it's better than the first it should be awesome, the bathroom scene in the first film still has the kids in fits of laughter. I would much rather watch Highlander on a loop than any of this Marvel or DC shit. Fantastic film, amazing atmosphere and scenery, with a decent bespoke sound track. By no means perfect but pretty sure a remake would fuck it up. I'm struggling to count on one finger how many remakes of classics have anywhere near equalled the original. You can tell Fish loves his CGI.
