Saving Mr Banks. Actually enjoyed it. Helps that the wife's favourite film is Mary Poppins. I spent half the film just watching her watching the film, awestruck like a kid for the first time at Disney

Aye, my lass went all dewey eyed for it too. Lots of squeezing my arm whenever there was the hint of a song or something. Then of course we had to watch the Poppins movies at the next opportunity.

Did you think the mood changes from LA to Australia were a bit jarring?

Aye, but I guess that was the point. Loved the end credits too

Yeah had to explain what was going on to the lass, but I'd love to hear the rest of them.

There's a movie coming out about Reagan (I think) where they're using loads of the recorded conversations in the oval office as well.

The Lord of My Ring.

3 hour biopic of a wizened old shaman coming to terms with a changing world told through the prism of a marathon stint on the bog. Twist in the tale is he is stander. Graphic, deep and thought provoking.

9/10

The Hobbit. Another really good installment. As my mate said yesterday, at this stange Jackson could probably make a three hour film of Gandalf taking a shit and I'd love it.

None of these films are a patch on even the worst Harry Potter.

'Wolf of Wall Street' looks like return to form for old man Scorcese. Never the same after he gave up the white powders.

You're spot on.... apart from Boardwalk Empire, Shutter Island, The Departed, Gangs of New York, Bringing Out The Dead, Casino, Goodfellas and the King of Comedy all being somewhere between brilliant and perfect like.

His best work is over two decades old. I didn't much rate any of it since Casino. Boardwalk Empire is tv.

Of those I mentioned, only Goodfellas and King of Comedy fall outside your new criteria.

Barely anyone makes a single film as good as Raging Bull or Taxi Driver in their whole career. So probably a bit much to expect that standard to be maintained for all of a 4 decade career. I'll guarantee you now that this one isn't as good as either of those too.

He's made plenty of brilliant films that were highlighhts of the year over the past 2 decades though :)

Fail to see how 'return to form' can be subjugated later into 'new criteria'....

Casino was his last great work. The rest you mention were pretty average overblown cheese balls. Departed I will concede he had to try and make a gay looking DiCaprio come across as 'hard' which is impossible...Shutter Island a poor mans Hitchcock...Gangs of New York was over staged pastiche...These are not 'brilliant films' by any stretch of the imagination. However I do agree that Raging Bull and Taxi driver will probably remain unmatched. From what I've heard the new one is going to be really good....As I said earlier 'a return to form'...;)

My fav film of 2013 is 'Only god forgives' btw.

A visionary chef de cuisine tour through vibrant colours (coded in red)...Lynchian lingering camera aesthetics and Cimino level tense - loaded set ups. A must see.

I really wanted to like this having loved pretty much everything that Winding Refn has done before.

I thought it looked great but it was hopelessly pretentious and Gosling seemed to be doing a parody of his character in Drive. I know Winding Refn was experimenting in this film but I don't think it worked as I found it unwatchable at times.

I know what you mean I was a bit 'resistant' on first viewing...Seen it 3 times now. Just immerse yourself in it....

"return to form" wasn't the criteria :) your criteria for his quality output changed from his standards slipping after coming off the drugs (which he did prior to Raging Bull - 1980) to them slipping 20 years ago (1993).

In truth he was only on the drugs for a couple of years years.

I've no problem with your view of the quality of his films, I can agree to disagree on that. It's factually wrong to suggest he had a string of hits on drugs though. If anything the drugs were only ever detrimental to him. He only hit them hard after he'd made the brilliant Mean Streets/Taxi Driver, he then went completely to rat shit with New York New York(awful) and The Last Waltz, Raging Bull was his return to form having come off the drugs. De Niro is credited with saving his life getting him clean to make that film.
