Some of them were only necessary if you're looking to make a 3hrx3 part flick.

a lot of jacksons stuff is a bit self indulgent like, like said i can understand some of it but some of the changes completely change the characters development.

bilbo is meant to choose "Sting" for himself , and by the end of the movie, at that section of the book he's still crapping his pants at everything

The giant birds make a point of calming him down for instance in the book and talk to him

Can understand them making him younger/slimmer like but the attitude bleh

it was alright but i'm not as hyped up as some people will be over it.

Loved the animated one when i was a kid

The animated one was what got me in to the genre when I was a kid and go read the books etc. then be gutted when they didnt make a follow up to finish it.

This is essentially the same point but:

Jackson has the benefit of making the film after making after LOTR. Tolkein didn't; the Hobbit was a child's story. Jackson could have made a light hearted, shorter version of the Hobbit, but that wouldn't be in keeping with the tone set by the LOTR films. Therefore he has to bring in darker themes and those that allude to the later books/films. Which adds to the length.

I'm not a Tolkein/Jackson fanboy by any means and I was very suspicious of the need to make the book take up so many and such long films. However, after seeing it, I felt the length and pacing of this film was appropriate in my eyes, as to whether it needs 9hrs of cinema altogether I can't comment (nor can anyone else IMO) until we've seen all three parts.

The subtle changes to Bilbo's development are needed to give his character an arc in this film otherwise he'd be a bit dull.

What a bitch that little lass was. "We'll I'm sorry I'm such a horrible person!"

Just watched Django Unchained. Absolute quality.

Me too. tarantino was fucking awful. Was his accent supposed to be comically bad?

Really enjoyed it. Got a bit to broad sometimes. The kkk bit could have been in the fast show.

Just finished watching and agree with you about the KKK bit.

cracking film though, Dicaprios villain was genuinely excellent, was never quite sure what he was going to do.

Tonight's bout of insomnia drove me to finally crack open the "Damned United" DVD I was given by a friend a while back, and frankly I'm perplexed.

I assumed (and, perhaps foolishly, was anticipating) a nuanced portrayal of the complex personality of Brian Clough, insofar as we know/knew him; instead, the film basically delivered a brutal 90-minute character assassination of the man followed by a brief interlude over the end credits instructing us to love him after all - which makes me wonder if love (albeit conflicted love) was what I was supposed to be feeling in the first place. If so, the makers really missed their mark, because he was portrayed as an utter twat throughout, and without any prior knowledge I'd have quite readily come away thinking he was a pompous nobody who got exactly what he deserved.

Maybe it comes down to Michael Sheen's apparent decision to play the man himself as a Welsh-sounding Tony Blair, mannerisms and all, but still: if the filmmakers' intent was to engender even the slightest sympathy for Clough among its viewers, it didn't work with me at least. All very odd.

I think you might be superimposing Sheen's performances as Blair onto his one of Clough - I didn't get that impression and neither did those that knew him. In a documentary where the Leeds players were unanimous in damning the film, they all said Sheen nailed Clough to a tee.

Argo - Very good film. As someone else said, I think it was Gemmill, Affleck is turning out to be a good director and has surrounded himself with great technicians of film making, the cinematography in Argo at times was outstanding.
