Once the full details of his death came out, I just thought, much like Ant above, "stupid fucker".

He'd rigged the jump on Leaning Tower, done it and filmed it several times. Then he left it rigged, went off elsewhere for a month , and returned to de-rig it.

In that month, his ropes were exposed to rain , high wind, and freezing. The most crucial detail here for me is wind- given the length of the drop, and the time it was left rigged, it's almost inevitable that it would have been abraded , probably at several points.

Instead of de-rigging it as he'd planned, he decided to do another jump- the one where his rope snapped and killed him.

As also mentioned , he had a young kid by then too.

The clip above is impressive for its speed, but it's basically showboating. It's not a difficult route, I did harder routes as a matter of course when I was into it, and I was by no means a top grade climber.

You should have a look at E11, by Hot Aches. It's about Dave McCloud, a Scottish lad who is arguably the worlds best all round climber at present.

He did a route on Dumbarton Rock which is inconceivably hard. And it was done "Traditional"- without bolts pre placed.

Here's a clip of the kind of falls he took doing it.

There's been a chance to catch up on some older classics at an outdoor cinema, so I've been taking advantage of it:

Tokyo Story:

I've seen it before and it's one of my all-time favourites. It deals with those moments that many movies think are wasted time and not worth bothering with. Rather, they are the moments that most effect our lives. An amazing film. 10/10

Red Desert:

Impressive to look at, but mainly impenetrable tosh that makes its point early on (modern society is destroying our souls, blah, blah, blah) and then pushes it to the nth degree. I shouldn't have continued watching it, but felt duty-bound to stay til the end. Fuck knows why. I didn't like L'Aventura either. I'm not going to bother with any more Antonioni. 3/10

Had a look on IMDb and scrolled through the top 250 on that bad boy, picked a few to watch:

A clockwork orange - 8/10 was good but a bit weird at times.

Full metal jacket- 8.5/10 enjoyed this film, the drill sergeant was hilarious

The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Flimsy contrivance to get Dench et all out to India but a such a cast simply cannot fail to deliver, a very enjoyable way to while away an afternoon.

Nice cinematography of the Indian sun highlighting their withering faces n'all!

Religulous

Editing the reactions of the hispanic fella who thought he was the second coming of Jesus together with bits of Scarface was brilliant. In fact, the old film footage were all the best bits, the interviews and monologues weren't particularly illuminating. Worth a watch though.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

I thought it was immense. I was gripped from start to finish. Read some criticism afterwards that it skimmed over far too much of the depth of the book & series to make any sense whatsoever both in terms of language and story. I haven't read the book or seen the show, but I thought the spy speak was well used and understandable, while the storyline was simple enough to 'get' and complex enough that I want to go back and watch it again. Looking forward to reading the book and watching the series now too.

Watched Woman in Black. It's canny. Nowt amazing. Good to see a suspense horror/thriller rather than the overdone shock/gore type.

Drive

I loved the Pusher trilogy, so had high hopes for this when I realised it was the same director. I wasn't as impressed as I anticipated though. It was a good watch but I'm not one for the eighties so the Miami Vice stylings of it put me off a bit. The soundtrack is lush, but the sub-Herzog drawn out shots of him going about his business and the California skyline that accompanied it annoyed me despite how pretty they were.

Kill List

Don't want to say too much about it because I never knew much and the places it goes were a total head-fuck. Two ex-army fellas have become hitmen and after a botched job in Kiev haven't done any work in 8 months. In need of money to support his demanding wife one of them is persuaded by the other to take on a list of hits. As he works through them he starts getting less professional and more bloodthirsty....and then it goes fucking mental. Get hold of it, something different to the usual bollocks....
