The Fish 10978
Jarhead really rate this, would recommend anyone watch it. Don't let anyone you live with ask one single question however as it will inevitably lead to a torrent of queries about war, munitions, tactics, chemical weapons, the ranks within the American army and any number of issues that you, as a (in the most case) British civilian, wouldn't have the first flying fucking clue about... /rant about bloody women and their inability to just watch a fucking film without questioning you about it. The Fish 10978
I would say that it's a very different kind of war film, but one that is only possible with the War in Iraq. It shows what soldiers endure through boredom , low morale etc. Brilliant photography, really strong main characters and a quite chilling depiction of that war. I think it really defines Desert Storm, the ambiguous reasons behind the war, and the futility of the conflict. It's almost as if this story is the perfect metaphor for the war itself. I would recommend (if possible) watching an abridged version with the deleted scenes left in, although I'm guessing Sam Mendes knows what he's up to. I'd put it behind Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan but I think that is because those two weren't just movies that went some way to suggest the horrors of war, but they were also awesome stories and by Directors at the top of their respective games. I think the problem with this film is the unpopularity of the conflict, I don't just mean politically, also as subject matter... perhaps because it's still a matter of current affairs or perhaps because the story isn't dominated by action in the same way as Ryan, or Apoc. It's certainly worth a watch, just don't go expecting any beach storming, either by Wagner's Valkyries, or bullet magnet boats.
catmag 337
I watched Jarhead a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. It's not my normal type of film but I was outnumbered when it came to the choice of film that evening! Oh, and I didn't need to ask any girlie questions about it
Happy Face 29
The Woodsman Left me with mixed feelings, as most films about paedophilia do. You're asked to take the guy at face value, someone who recognises he has an illness, wants to 'be normal' but can see that there's little light at the end of the tunnel. I was concerned that it asked me to be sympathetic, but then it shows you just how close he comes to giving in to temptation. It's unbearable to watch and sickens you that someone this dangerous is paroled. It answers no questions and comes to no conclusion; neither does it excuse anyone making the decisions they do. Kevin Bacon's performance is the best I've seen from him. Locked up for good or rehabilitated? The fact is the latter requires putting faith in a convicted child abuser. It would be very rare cases where I could imagine an abuser earning that trust.

The Fish 10978
didn't rate the Business. seemed more like a "Made for tv" film. At no point did I feel anything for any of the characters. innumerable volume of better crime/gangster films
Renton 22054
Saw the Da Vinci code yesterday. What a pile of contrived bollocks. I haven't read the book, but if the plot is anywhere near as weak as the film's, then it really is a case of Jesus Wept. Incredible that anyone can make so much money from such a poor story. I heard it cost about £150M to make this pile of horseplop, and you have to wonder where the money went. I suspect quite a bit went on Tom Hank's wages for one, which would be as wasteful as us paying Luque's salary. He is completely unconvincing. As for the catholic church being offended by this, they should really get a grip. It's obvious to anyone with more than one braincell this is a work of fiction, and a poor one at that. Hope the remake of the omen is better.

It's an uncomfortable experience, and one that asks more questions than it answers. You suspect that Bacon's character deep down still does not think he did anything wrong. Sad is the most appropriate adjective I'd say.
