Fantastic Voyage - erm, fantastic.

Going to see Prophet with my housemate tonight. He's now bringing his lovely but loudmouthed girlfriend - if they chatter all the way through then heads will roll.

Gooseberry, do you bat for the other team by any chance LL?

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Ice Age 3 - A crisply shot, prosaicly acted, fact defying portrayal of a post Cretaceous dinosaur class. Forgettable soundtrack and nothing else of interest either. I thought it was very, very poor indeed.

Scrat was still funny like.

Wouldn't mind seeing Precious myself. Hardly heard a bad word said about it.....just one bad review and the bloke who wrote that said Norbett was one of his favourite films so he can fuck off.

Haven't seen it apart from the trailer and my first thought was that it was incredibly crass to follow up two semi-accurate potrayals of "history" with something so daft as a dinosaur based tale.

It might get Loud.....documentary on the guitar with interviews and music from Jimmy Page, the Edge and Jack White. Really really really enjoyed this, waaaaaaay more respect for Jack White now.

From what I've heard, Precious sounds like Black poverty porn craftily released in time for the Oscars. Every year there's a film put out at this time with such intetions - Benjamin Button was last years'. Can't be as good as the fourth series of The Wire anyway.

A friend of mine saw it the weekend and endorsed these views. Fuck that.

If you want an oscar go for disability (mental or physical), triumph over adversity, biopic of a celeb who had some sort of disability or triumph over adversity, or somebody who is a bit mental but with a special talent (such as maths or piano playing!)! Or maybe be an glamorous film star who makes themsleves a bit ugly for a role and that has a good chance as well. Throw in the holocaust as well and you can't fail!

Be interesting for once if they just went solely on what was a great film even if it was about somebody who was totally 'able' and didn't triumph over fuck all!

Robots

I hate it when a film doesn't even follow the logic of its own world. I'm happy to have these talking, emotional robots that eat and even breath, but the design of the whole city is just ridiculous and character is often ignored for the sake of a joke which is very annoying. Robin Williams plays Fender, a kerazy robot who often falls apart. That says everything about the lack of originality.

Cabin Fever

Takes a little while to get going, but the last 45 minutes are tense and enjoyable.

Silent Light

Mexican film about a married man struggling with his conscience during an affair his wife tolerates. It's REALLY slow. Like 9 minute long shots of a tree slow. I loved it.

Like The Hangover. No film has given me greater joy for ages!!

Has a comedy ever won an Academy Award? Has a film with masterbating babies ever even been nominated?

I liked Hostel too. Shame about Hostel 2.

Annie Hall, The Apartment, The Sting...

I think it's a more recent development that a film has to be worthy rather than good in order to win. The Oscars trying to be like Cannes. They have no faith in the value of their films as entertainment. They're right to a large degree cos most new hollywood comedies are badly written cash cows. But stuff like the Big Lebowski and Toy Story deserve to be right up there (but won little or nothing)....as does UP this year.

Wall-E

Liked it a bit more than the first time, but still not one of Pixar's best imo. Too slow for kids, too lightweight for grown-ups.

Be Kind, Rewind

An excellent idea spoiled. The remakes of Ghosbusters and Rush Hour 2 were the funniest parts. Abandoning that approach for the Fats Waller documentary, while admirable in terms of promoting originality, was a stupid idea because it defeats it's own argument by showing their original film isn't half as entertaining as their remakes.

I watched UP earlier, absolutely blown away, it might be that I've not seen a pixar film for a while (since wall-e actually) but I actually thought it was the best of theirs I have seen

Winter Light

Bergman's favourite of his own films. Didn't do it so much for me.

Ashes of Time Redux

When Christopher Doyle is shooting a film with action choreographed by Sammo Hung I'm bound to enjoy it....love to hear any sort of explanation as to what the fuck was going on though.
