Cloverfield - Yeah, not bad. Id liked it to have fleshed the story out some what more, especially at the end. Watchable, but nowt fantastic.

Just finished watching it, I like the concept but it certainly left you wanting more in very frustrating way, I was expecting some kind of post-script at the end of the footage, quite good all in all but quite frustrating too.

Thats exactly what me and wor lass said. Kinda wanted some explanation at the end.

I thought the fact that it offered no explanation at all made it all the better for me. If they'd explained it or shown the monster more it would have just ended up like Godzilla.

Well, even without the explanation the whole Monster coming out of the sea, wrecking skyscrapers thing, does hint very slightly of Godzilla.

Yeah but that film (the one with Matthew Broderick) was shite.

Hard Eight

Paul Thomas Anderson's first film finally got a UK DVD release today. Should have really got the region 1 version a while ago though as it has a commentary the UK release doesn't. Why are all Andersons UK DVD's so shit compared to region 1? Anyway, the always brilliant Philip Baker Hall is Sydney, who seemingly takes an interest in the lives of complete strangers (John C Reilly and Gwyneth Paltrow) and tries to help them when they're low. Samuel L Jackson comes along and puts a cat among the pigeons though. Not much else I can say about the plot without spoilers. I've finally seen all his films now and I'd say this was as good as the brilliant Punch Drunk Love or Boogie Nights. The other 2 are still a class apart though.

There's a short compilation of Anderson's films on youtube that makes me moist by the way....

Sleuth (the original one).

Been after seeing this for ages but for some reason you can't get the DVD in this country. Superb film with fantastic performances from two of this country's greatest ever actors.

You do have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit to believe that even a blind man couldn't spot Caine's disguise but it did keep me guessing as to whether he was playing two parts or not.

Classic.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Interesting heist gone wrong film with Philip Seymore Hoffman and Ethan Hawke as two pretty fucking loathsome brothers who try to do a roberby of their parents jewellery store. Good performances from the lead two and Albert Finney as their dad who is also pretty unapealing. I wasn't keen on the structure which kept jumping back and forth in time between the differnt characters but the story and acting is good and it's well worth watching if only for Marissa Tomei getting her kit off.

CJ7

New film from Steven Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung-Fu Hustle, King of Comedy, God of Cookery). Heard mixed reports so I was dubious. Go in with a similar level of trepedation and you could be pleasantly suprised. It's basically a remake of ET with a more kiddy freindly alien and humour. Where it's just as good as ET is at pulling the heart strings. I blubbed. And where it surpasses ET is with the laughs, as I say, childish, but when the kid goes in the classroom with an alien poo in his hand I nearly shat myself. Chow flexes his directorial muscle with expansive vistas and stomach turning dips off tall buildings too.

It's also a film with a huge social conscience. It pointedly makes the comparison between the haves and have-nots, as China's economy is soaring and hundreds of millions are being lifted out of poverty, Chow invokes memories of the Chinese mine explosion which killed hundreds of the poorest workers the like of which still do the most dangerous jobs for longer hours than any other nation under ever worsening income inequality.
