Eastern Condors

Absoloute class Hong Kong version of The Dirty Dozen. You know the episode of the Simpsons with the Yakuza battle going on outside, where you don't get to see what the bloke in the white suit did, there's a bloke in this with a white fan who you know all the way through is going to kick arse, and when it happens the final confrontation is a work of genius. Set in Vietnam it has touches of Deerhunter and Commando but is funny as owt.

The Trouble With Harry

Dunno what Hitchcock was thinking, but this was just bizarre. A black comedy about a small village where a dead body is found and everyone wants to just brush it under the carpet. It was a terrible script with people talking to themselves throughout just to provide exposition, there were people tripping over the body but not noticing it, the victims wife (Shirley Mclaine - who I love) who's meant to be the sympathetic lead, was happy to see the bloke dead and starts planning another marriage (her third) while the corpse is in her bath.

After the hour or so it took me to get to grips with the fact that this was a complete departure for Hitchcock, I could sort of go along with it and enjoy it for what it was, but it's nowhere near one of his best.

I saw Mr Bean's holiday or whatever with my nephews at the Kids club.

Not being au fait with Mr Bean, what's the craic? Obviously he is some sort of retard, is that what's supposed to be funny? Is he autistic? Why doesn't he speak?

Aye it's not one of his best although it's an ok rainy Saturday afternoon type film. Tbh I don't think either of Hitchcock's attempts at comedy (Mr & Mrs Smith being the other) really worked and suggest that although he was undoubtly a genius at what he did (which was to direct a good twenty or so absolute classics), he was a little limited in range. Especially when compared to someone like Howard Hawks who had no really identifiable style but managed to direct numerous classics in various genre's.

Anyway, I've watched a couple of Robert Altman 'Clasics' this week and I have to say I'm disapointed in them both. The two films in question are McCabe & Mrs Miller and M.A.S.H.

Both of them are incredably highly regarded but both failed to deliver any real substance for. McCabe looks fantastic and the acting and direction are both strong, but the story seems very thin and MASH basically has no story and just wasn't particularly funny.

Very disapointing after I loved the last Altman film I watched.

MASH was class I thought. Much darker than the series though.

"Suicide is painless......."

TBH I thought the song was the best thing about it.

I didn't dislike it tbf it's just I was expecting some sort of classic comedy and it there were very parts of it that I can remember laughing at. I did like the Colonel and Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland were excellent as always but I just thought it wasn't that funny.

Mind you I feel the same about Dr Strangelove.

Maybe it's dated now but I reckon it gets its acclaim for being ahead of its time. I liked Dr Strangelove too.

I know the overlapping dialogue was pretty revolutionary on MASH but you see it all of the time now so it doesn't really have the same impact anymore. You can get that a lot with older films. Kane is widely held as a masterpiece for it's camerawork or editing or whatever. But we've seen all those things millions of times now so it's difficult to appreciate it anymore.

I like Dr Strangelove I just didn't laugh at it. I found the whole senario funny but enjoyed more as a drama.

"helllo, Dmitri"

It's not a belly laugh per scene film, but it's a grin from ear to ear throughout film.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in the war room"
