SloopJohn 0
I was little dissapointed by the it. It's certainly good, but by no means is it a classic. I think my problem with surrealist films is that they seem to largely operate on a completely intellectual level, and the excellent ones, which are few and far between, operate slightly on an emotional one. I think this is partially due to the directness of the meaning that has been injected into their various surrealist elements and because this red door symbolizes passion or this dream sequence is a mirror of this specific theme, the mind is ultimately too caught up in decoding the symbolism and meaning rather than experiencing the film. however. the film was beautifully created and an excellent satire. but cinema can offer so much more than these charming, and acute insights that Bunel makes regarding the French upper classes, and that's ultimately what I find disappointing about this film. It was also a tad predictable at times which is the last thing a surrealist film should be.

Some bits were a bit OTT and ridiculous like, but it is Indi after all! I watched it this morning, highly enjoyable, some great references to Raiders of the lost ark, but no where near as good as the original.

Don't expect it to be Citizen Kane or the Godfather, its a very far fetched adventure starring a pensioner, but its lots of fun, just enjoy it for what it is and I'm sure you'll love it. sammynb 3342
Control - Interesting but disappointing. It's well shot and the use of black and white stock is commendable but it's probably not moody enough. The subject lends itself to being under lit and if he wanted to emphasise that Macclesfield was grey, the harsh daylight scenes didn't work. The other thing that didn't work for me was the fact it was Deborah's version of Ian Curtis' life. The things I've read about Curtis and his relationship with his wife are the complete opposite to how she was portrayed as the victim in Control. Every story has two sides but it was interesting to watch the reaction of my lass who watched it with me but knows nothing about Joy Division other than a few songs, she naturally sided with the poor wife!!! In the end it's less a story about Ian Curtis, it's the tale of how Debbie Curtis husband cheated on her! Shame because the whole story would of made a better film! Glad to see they at least got the Hooky character right and he was still a cunt.

Also their very subtle nod to the fact Bernie's gay, where when the females burst into the room after Ian's had a fit on stage, Hooky and Morris gladly lead them away, while Bernie takes his time to leave the room. Or was it?
